Sounds of American Speech - A practice regimen for the Neurological patient is a program to assist persons who have speech deficiencies after stroke or other trauma to attain as normal speech as possible. This taped program gives the patient the opportunity to practice outside of therepy sessions to speed recovery. Under the direction of Speech Specialist, the user has a model to practice against and with at his leisure with positive instructional material. The program consists of two volumes, 24 lessons each. Volume 1 concentrates on initial consonant sounds and blends while volume 2 gives directed practice with final consonant sounds, blends and clusters. Each lesson is about 12 - 15 minutes of directed drill. Each drill consists of precise directions as how to make the target phoneme with practice with individual sounds, words, phrases and sentences. The instruction practice manuel is accompanied by graphics, photographs and a mirror. The author, who had a stroke, is the developer of ACCENT ENGLISH Sounds of American Speech. This program, an ACCENT REDUCTION course of practice, was designed to help non-native speakers of English to improve their pronunciation. Each of the 12 versions of the program targets persons from a different language culture. After author's stroke he began therapy with a speech pathologist. He began using material from his own programs under the guidance of his therepist. It became obvious that progress was accelerated. Based on that, Sounds of American Speech was developed to assist others similar problems.
