This review is from: Sounds of the Czars (Audio CD)
Any fan of Los Straitjaclets or The Blue Hawaiians is going to want this disc. Sounds of the Czars covers the old swinging Serge Gainsberg, not the dancy disco Gainsberg. They even have the stuff to take on Yma Sumac's Taki Rari on guitars bass and drums. The band's original numbers hold up to all of this: the extended intro to "Theme from an Awkward Kiss" is a fitting tribute to the late Juan Esquivelle, and the theremin on "Last American Man of Action" has to be heard to be believed. I saw these guys play last fall at an art gallery full of Shag's Paintings. The paintings were great, but the music was even better. I'm so glad that this fine power lounge combo finally has a disc out. Buy this. Swill martinis in your leopard skin bikinis. The world needs this music right now. It's a blast from our cold war past with a punchy new kick butt vibe. Buy two.
