It's Fantastic!,

This album is one of the coolest, craziest things I've heard all year! Definitely one of the coolest things on Ipecac. It's got all sorts of crazy beats like Aphex Twin but then mixes in spy music and surf rock and all these big horn sections and things.
I honestly haven't been able to stop listening to it since I bought it!

This album is just plain great. Hard beats, surf rock guitars and noise in just the right places. For some reason, everytime I listen to this cd (which is very often), I think of 60's spy movies. Go figure. There's is really no easy way to describe this album, just simply put, it is great. Anyone who saw him open for Fantomas and Melt-Banana and liked it should buy the cd right now.

The Pay off,
By Mud Pyramid "rilaly" (Omaha, Nebraska USA) - See all my reviews

The end provide payoffs on each track. I've listened to more than my share of Jazz and Jazz fusion albums. I've heard some Jazz musicians spend 29 minutes on the construction and deconstruction of a note. This may be great for the expert musician to show off his chops and to venerate the art of the genre, but it doesn't provide an enjoyable listening experience. I don't understand how non-musicians can enjoy the 29 minute deconstruction songs that heavily rely on ambient structures. I can't decide if these people want to appear intelligent by saying that they get it, or if they truly get it in a manner I never will. Due to the fact that I consider myself a jazz enthusiast I prefer to think it's the former. I prefer the introduction, the progression, and then the payoff. The pay off, of course, is relative to the song. Each of these songs have a multitude of payoffs. It's hard to pick a favorite for me, but if you want to sample before buying check out Ruin Anyone, Anywhere, Anything or the song Fit to die.

Dear Ipecac,

Thank you for bringing us this album! Having a wide variety of musical tastes, from bleepy-blippy IDM to pounding techno to swingin' old jazz, I never thought I'd find so many styles combined so easily.
It's like a your music collection got a mind of its own, and then went schizophrenic. Atari Teenage Riot-style assaults layered over jazzy TV theme music... Richard D. James has a nightmare involving 60's spy films... Whatever, it's a great piece. If you enjoy taking your ears off the beaten path and letting them try something new, pick this up!

Fabulous!,

I love this album. It's Fast-paced audio and noise rock is just an experience in itself. The all the tracks show a good diversity of tempos, beats and sounds. However, It's similar to K.K Null's Atomik Disorder in that it hints towards chaos. Over all it's a great CD, if you're bored by mainstream garbage, I'm not even sure what Genre this Cd would belong.

Jazz, glitch and click don't mix,

It appears as though End wanted to fill some sort of gap in the electronic music spectrum. Although the tracks are crisp and clean, it was almost embarrassing to play it out loud. I can only describe it as immature, throwing a jazz riff here and a Sitar riff there. It sounds like Autechre regressed back to grade school, only End has less purpose and direction in thier tracks. I apologize for the negative criticism, but I just don't see this as a keeper. Even buying it used didn't soften the blow of an album which shouldn't have been. Three stars for putting in the effort to produce the album, but no more. You'd be well advised to spend your cash elsewhere.

I saw Fantomas play in Austin, Tx a few weeks ago. This guy walked out onto the stage before the show and started messing with a laptop that was sitting on a table. At first it seemed like he was prepping some stuff for the first act to go on. Then he cranked it up, the beats kicked in and we heard the end.It was great stuff. All done by one guy and his laptop mostly. Worth checking out, this stuff sounds good. |
