After carefully researching as many rain recordings as possible on Amazon and reading all reviews I had hoped I had made a good choice with this CD. Unfortunately I discovered that not only is the recording looped about every 60 seconds but there is an unmistakable low frequency rumble that is very apparent listening though my 5.1 system and my Bose Tri-Port headphones. As a recording engineer I recognize this to most likely be a truck or car passing by and passing the sound up through the microphone stands that were obviously not de-coupled from the ground. The bottom line is I hear this rumble each and everytime I start to relax and it renders the CD completely useless to me. The recording is otherwise a good one and the stereo image presented seems authentic. Since nobody else has complained of this rumble, I will assume that it will only bother someone with a trained ear.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad but play it in the other room to muffle the sharpnes, June 18, 2002

I am writing this listening to the CD. I am a Washingtonian, and we know rain. You may ask yourself why would a Washingtonian buy a rain CD, well being stationed in a fairly dry place for the last 2 years, I am in need of a little bit of home for sanity's sake.

The rain on the CD sounds like a fairly hard rain (about a 7), with big drops hitting, and/or run off hitting a hard surface, and standing water, in the area. The rainstorm has waves to it, so you will get harder and lighter sounds of the rain.

It is in stereo, without music, voices, or those irritating birds.

It reminds me of sitting on my porch at my grandfather's or at camp, during a heavy rainfall waiting to go out and play. An East Coast small town rain, it sounds hard without that soft Country sound to it.

To me this is not a relaxing type of rain that makes you want to snuggle up to your wife or girl friend. After a bit you feel like looking out the window to see how hard it is raining, then to see if the water might be rising. Adjusting the sound volume does help but it just makes the rain sound quieter along with those irritating drops hitting standing water/road. The day I received the CD I played it on the boom box in the bedroom. Playing the rain fairly softly. When my wife walked in she thought we had burst a water pipe. To make it sound better I found that adjusting the volume and sitting in another room makes it more muffled and less in your face (i.e. overbearing).

For a sound sample, open up your washing machine lid when it is filling up and you will get the same type of overbearing water sound but without the rain.

5.0 out of 5 stars So relaxing!, April 24, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Sounds of Earth: Rain in Country (Audio CD)
I often listen to this CD right before bed, because it helps me unwind after a hard day, and is great at helping me get to sleep. This CD is pure rain and nothing else. There is no music and, more importantly, no thunder. It's very relaxing to listen to, and is a great stress reliever. I highly recommend it!

1.0 out of 5 stars Repetitious recording, July 18, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Sounds of Earth: Rain in Country (Audio CD)
I had great hopes for this CD, given that it claimed to present over an hour of continuous rain recording without additional sounds. Unfortunately, for the discerning ear, it is clear the company has recorded only about 60 seconds worth of rainfall, then repeats this same track continuously throughout the CD (staggering the track occasionally). Perhaps this won't matter to some, but I was disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful rain sounds, April 6, 2007

This CD has the pleasant sounds of rain falling outside your window. There are no sounds of frogs croaking or birds chirping, etc., which I find unpleasant, as they keep me awake. I put this CD on repeat and it plays throughout the night. I REALLY like this soothing sound of rain that is on this CD. It is the best "rain CD" that I've found. I have given away a couple of other "rain CDs" because they had "thunder sounds" & "frogs/birds/etc.sounds" BUT this CD is just "wonderful rain sounds"!

2.0 out of 5 stars Lovely Rain, July 3, 2002

I have always loved the sound of rain. This CD has captured that sound perfectly--with no other sounds or music to distract.
The rain itself has different sounds--when the wind blows a sheet of rain, when the rain falls in the puddle it has created, when it rains very hard, when the rain is lighter. It's a lovely CD to fall asleep to.

5.0 out of 5 stars No looping!, September 9, 2007

The house next door was rented to partying college students! Desperate, I tried several rain CDs before landing on this one. The cheaper CDs had 30 second or two minute loops, which I found to be very distracting; often with a click as the loop repeats. Another CD I tried had birds and other things going on. This one was rain -- just rain -- and non-repeating. The volume does fluctuate as the rain gets heavier and lighter. I don't hear the low-frequency rumble another reviewer complained of, probably because I am playing it on a $100 ministereo system bought in haste at the same time. I found this CD to be invaluable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome...Rain In Stereo, June 28, 2007

I work 3rd shift, and I have trouble sleeping during the day. A friend of mine suggested this cd, and I'm glad I took her advice. While waiting on my cd to arrive, I found a bargain rain cd at a retail store. While I enjoyed that one too, Rain in Country is far superior to it. I have a 5.1 surround sound system, and this cd is so much clearer than the retail one. The clarity is amazing, and so real. Its like you are sitting on your front porch with your Grandfather as the rain pours down. Remember those days? I think there is some faint thunder, but I'm not really sure. I believe this to purely sounds of rain, with no music or birds or duck sounds. Another thing is how the rain sometimes is softer and sometimes harder; just like a real rain shower. I put it on repeat several minutes before bed around 8am in the morning, and then I start to read my Vince Flynn or Ronald Reagan Diaries. It is so soothing, and I quickly fall to sleep. Even during the day when I'm off, I find this so relaxing. My wife loves it too. I don't claim to know if this is the best or not, but compared to the other cd it is. The sound is so clear and life like in my stereo, I'm curious how they made it. This isn't a thunderstorm cd, but purely 63 minutes of rain. I may buy thunderstorm cd, but I won't buy another rain one. I am very very happy with this purchase & you will be too!

I have purchased this from Amazon and have purchased extra copies as well. It is worth the money to have two or three incase someone scratches it. Sleep is essential to good health! Thank goodness this CD does not contain the annoying and even shocking thunderclaps and goose honks other CD's have! I am ordering 2 more of these to share. It is perfect for going to sleep.Edit 2011-I still highly recommend this CD years later and still use it nightly. It is perfectly relaxing! I put it on replay mode and it continues all night. I have left it on for days at a time and no harm came to the CD. It is high quality. Actually it is amazing that it has been played over and over for years now at my home.
