5.0 out of 5 stars Sounds Like Fun
Sounds Like Fun is an excellent teaching tool for young children ages 1 to 5. And so much fun. I played it for my children when they were small, for them to listen to and during teaching times I would sing with them, and use props like apples and crayons for counting, adding, and subtracting. It is just great. I highly recommend it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Her voice is horrible
Even though the songs give a good message, some are very long and tedious to get through. You will find yourself singing "Baby, baby, Ba, Ba, Ba" in your head and will be quite frustrated that it won't leave! She goes through the whole alphabet in one tone! What makes it harder on the ears is the woman's voice. It is very flat and unanimated. If Barbara Milne (wrote...

5.0 out of 5 stars I really like this CD, June 26, 2008

I bought this CD years ago and it is very nice. The music is soothing and not obnoxious. The melodies are catchy and sometimes I find myself singing the songs all day long--esp. months of the year and counting by 10's. What you will hear is a lady singing while playing the guitar.

5.0 out of 5 stars Multiple Generations, January 7, 2011
This review is from: Sounds Like Fun (Audio CD)
I used to play this regularly for each of my children at bed time. I think the best review I can offer is that both of my sons now in their late 20's have children of their own and they both play this for my grandchildren having begged me for copies of the tape. My 15 year old daughter is listening to it as I write this for the first time in many years and remembers almost every one of the songs. It is the repetition, the consistant patterns in the voice, and the valuable messages that make this such an effective and lovable set of songs. I can't help but believe this tape has helped every one of my children learn, and each remembers this tape fondly. I highly recommend this for any preschool child.

Unlike a previous poster, I don't think this woman's voice is "horrible." I am not sure what she means by that because at least Ms. Milne can carry a tune versus American Idol contestants. But I digress... at first, this CD did not appeal to me because of how mellow it is. I was accustomed to the likes of children's artists such as Steve Songs, Peter Himmelman, and Brady Rymer. These guys have soul.

But the thing I like about the Barbara Milne CD is that she is soothing and there seem to be better learning opportunities. I am convinced the simple repetition will sink in and my 4 year old will get something out of it. Although a song about "feet" by Peter Himmelman can be funny and catchy, I like the fact that Milne teaches the months of the year or how to count to 100 by tens. She throws in a couple standards like the Muffin Man and Where Has My Little Dog Gone. The only thing I find weird is that she decides to put the "months" song on the CD twice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love It, November 25, 2009

By granddaughter loves listening to this in the car. It has helped her with her kindergarten skills. When I received it, the case had a long scratch on the cover and the plastic thing in the middle that holds the CD in the case was all busted up so it slids around in the case.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for Kids, Especially When You Can Leave the Room, September 9, 2009

My husband bought this used for our then one-year-old.

She loves the simple songs, clear voice of Ms. Milne, repetitive tunes, and simple vocabulary. She still asks for it at nearly three. We use the tunes of the songs to prompt certain words (e.g. I hum the tune of the manners song when she forgets to ask for something politely, as a gentle, fun reminder) and it works well. She learned all her alphabet sounds this way and uses them to build her pre-reading skills (e.g. "Look mommy, "A" is for apple! A, a, a..."). As an educational tool, it's fantastic.

As a kids' music tape, though, it's really irritating for the parents. Worse, small children seem to love it. So if you bring it in the car, you're stuck with her annoying voice the whole way.

I would buy this over any tape if my aim was to introduce nursery rhymes and pre-k learning skills. I would NOT buy it for the music.

On the other hand, I bet my pre-schooler wouldn't sell her copy for anything.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Young Children and New Moms, September 6, 2009
This review is from: Sounds Like Fun (Audio CD)
This tape is very soothing and gives new moms some lengthier songs to sing to young, fussy children. Sometimes the short lullaby songs can get so repititious. I am a new grandma and am so happy I can get this for my grandson as I had the tape for my children. This CD is not a lesson in music appreciation as sometimes a mom's voice is not the greatest; but children love to be sung to by their moms and this gives them a larger repertoire to work with. It's very soothing and I highly recommend it for anyone with young children! If you have a fabulous voice, and you are unhappy with the voice on the tape, you can rework the songs but you have some great lyrics to work with! Good luck to you all and enjoy the babies!

What makes it harder on the ears is the woman's voice. It is very flat and unanimated. If Barbara Milne (wrote and sang the songs) has a boring voice singing, I can't imagine her normal voice. The only reason I am giving this CD a 2 star rating (instead of 1) is because the children (12-24mos) find this more of a "lullaby" CD than anything else. We pop in "Sounds Like Fun" if they need to tone down their energy or go to sleep. Barbara Milne, even with babies, has a good way with putting people to sleep.
