5.0 out of 5 stars Sounds GREAT..., November 15, 2006

I am going to review many Time-Life items that I have purchased over the years - Sounds of the 70's, Sounds of the 70's (Take Two), Legends of Rock & Roll, numerous 60's CDs & 50's CDs. The recordings are excellent and I know all the tunes - most have at least 18 songs. I would recommend any of Time-Life's compilations to anyone, who is looking for a great CD with alot of songs, we all know. The only complaint I have is that the CDs should have been maximized on the 50's & 60's selections. All in all, a very good purchase...

4.0 out of 5 stars Great but flawed..., November 12, 2011
By
This review is from: Sounds of the Seventies: 1978 (Time-Life Music) (Audio CD)
I have every one of the Time-Life Seventies CDs and was so glad to own them. They filled a void and had many hard-to-find tracks. 1978 was a superb year for music, and this disc reflects the diversity and excellence of the times with regard to the pop charts.

The quality of the disc is sonically fine. It was released before the Loudness Wars years, so the music is not over-compressed. Conversely, the songs are not mastered under a fine-toothed comb, as later reissues would strive for. Sometimes the AM songs of yesteryear were intentionally sped-up to comply with the singles format of the day, or to "excite' the record's vibe with a tempo change. Sometimes discs are made from masters that were cut for vinyl. My one complaint about this otherwise excellent CD is with the track, "Le Freak", by Chic. There is an anomaly with the speed/pitch of this track. As the song progresses, a perceptible change in pitch can be heard as the "tape source" seems to slow down. It actually modulates the key of the song down before it picks up again. It is clearly not intentional-sounding, as if to accommodate a dance mix. It sounds like a vari-speed issue either in the remastering phase, or it is simply an inferior source tape. As this was one of the most popular songs of 1978, and simply a great Chic song, it is a shame to have it included in this set in such a flawed condition.
