Book Description

February 13, 2003
As a child with a deaf father, Graeme Clark dreamed that one day he would find a way to help deaf people hear. Here he tells his story of his vision of creating a bionic ear, including the lack of funding for such a radical idea and opposition from the deaf community, who said it shouldn't be done. He reveals the human dramas, including the trials and struggles of the first human "guinea pigs" and details the experiences of children and adults hearing again, or hearing for the first time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A insight into stupidity of Deaf & hearing people, October 5, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sounds from Silence: Graeme Clark and the Bionic Ear Story (Paperback)
I was stunned by the stupidity of so many people who by there narrow minded attitude almost stopped what is a modern medical miracle, one day we should name and shame these professional people who in their lack of vision cast dispersions on work of people such as Graeme Clark, one academic in particular needs hanging in the hall of shame by the @, this also applies to the Deaf anti cochlear group who accept all modern conveniences but protest about the possibility there will be no more Deaf people / culture, As I count myself as one who was deaf I want every child and adult to have what I now have "A normal life" this book shows the struggle to develop this, when so many were against it and how a few stepped forward to achieve the impossible for which I thank every minute of every day, and twice when I hear a grandchild ask me a question.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most amazing stories in the history of medicine, July 23, 2007

This review is from: Sounds from Silence: Graeme Clark and the Bionic Ear Story (Paperback)
When people look back at the creation of the "bionic ear" in 100 years they will be amazed that the man who created it, Graeme Clark, remained virtually unknown during his lifetime. Dr. Clark should go down in history as one of the most brilliant and determined scientists of all time. This book is very simply and modestly stated, it is his own story, but the results of his work are quite simply miracles. The testimonial letters he reprints at the end of the book moved me to tears. "Sounds from Silence" is an insight into the motivations of a single-minded and dedicated scientist to restore the hearing of deaf children across the world. Beyond the medical miracles made possible by his invention, we have in the cochlear implant the beginnings of the fusion between humans and machines, and who knows where that will lead us. Just brilliant.
