Book Description

January 1993
This 141-page book is a readable, practical overview of the sounds of the English language and their representations in print. It describes how to help beginning readers decode words in print by learning their phonic structure. It contains specific examples of teaching tools and strategies for developing decoding skills, including sample worksheets and memory-aid pictures. The chapter on "phonemic awareness"--the ability to recognize and use the separate sounds that make up our spoken language--and the comprehensive appendix of prefixes and suffixes make this book a valuable reference for any teacher of reading. It is also the cornerstone of Concept Phonics, Dr. Fischer's highly successful multisensory program for teaching reading-decoding and spelling to students of any age.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"...a good and practical overview of English phonics." -- Choice, June 1993

"...a useful resource -- one that will complement any philosophy on how one teaches reading and how one learns to read." -- Iowa Reading Journal, Spring 1995

"Dr. Fischer has carefully edited this book for the use of the non-specialist, a parent, perhaps, who is home-schooling or a classroom teacher who is not a reading specialist. There is no educational jargon, and the tone projects an all adults as teachers, all people as learners outlook. Throughout, she examines each hurdle from the student's view with great understanding and empathy." -- LDA of Maine Newsletter, Fall 1993

This review is from: The Sounds and Spelling Patterns of English: Phonics for Teachers and Parents (Paperback)
This book is about Phonics. Although the first chapter is not written for children, it is very helpful in explaining how to de-code the mystery words. This book should be used by person's who may be assisting anyone with reading instruction. The book includes work pages (with answers given in the back of the book) and easy to understand text. This book is an excellent resource for teachers and also for parents who may be supplimenting the school's reading program. The book would be invaluable for parents who home-school. If you have ever wondered why the word "happening" is spelled using just one "n" and the word "beginning" is spelled using two "n"'s, this book will answer that question and many more!

This review is from: The Sounds and Spelling Patterns of English: Phonics for Teachers and Parents (Paperback)
This is a wonderful book that I have used over and over again for my own reference as well as with adult students -both ESL and literacy students. It explains the complex system of English phonics in simple, easy to understand language, but is by no means lightweight. There is a lot of information packed into a few pages. I love the visual way the vowels are organized. It makes them so easy for visual learners to grasp. It is an invaluable resource for all kinds of teachers and learners.
