Editorial Reviews

Review

"A great teaching tool...wish I'd had it years ago!" -- Louise Saunders, a member of the Stockton Symphony, and the Valley Arts Quartet.

"I find 'Sounds On Strings' a very workable and attractive series for young students. The rhythms, clapping, pizzicato and arco combinations are fun and provide good incentives for advancement." -- Betty Iacovetti, Former string instructor of Fresno City College [retired] and currently on the music staff at Fresno Pacific University. She has a large class of private violin students of all ages.

"The fine layout of this book helps to promote student success and works very well in a beginning string orchestra. Teachers are able to guide the pace of their students with a basic concept per page. Congratulations!" -- Susan C. Brown, Director of Strings, Cabrillo College, Aptos, California Author of "Two Octave Scales and Bowings for the Violin and Viola"

"The simplicity of this book MAKES you learn faster. I love the pictures." -- Barak Hernandez, an adult beginning violin student with no background in music.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not For Adults, April 6, 2001

I am a middle-aged writer/artist who bought this book hoping it would teach me something about the cello I recently rented and am trying to learn to play. This book, unfortunately for me, turned out to be a visual teaching aid for cello instructors who specialize in very young students who are amused by songs about eating hot dogs. It is my dream to play Luigi Boccherini well some day . . . ditties like Merrily We Roll Along are not the way I wanted to get started. The book has only two pages (simple drawings of a cello and bow) that contain any information whatsoever about the instrument, and one of those pages recommends games which encourage children to handle their bow like a toy, to be waved about like a worthless stick. If your child has a good bow, this is a very bad way to treat a valuable piece of musical equipment.

I'm an Adult Student and very interested in Beginning Cello Instruction books. If you don't know how to read music well - I found this book to be very helpful in explaining obscure things needed to read music. Other nicities the symbol for up bow and down, learning rests, etc. No book is as good as a teacher but this helps compliment them. It includes all those minutia but crucial points they seem to cram in a lesson and in the beginning we seem to forget.
