Maurice Pledger's book have great illustrations that are detailed and true to life. Any of his books should be visually pleasing. This book contains five two-page pop-up layouts covering different habitats (Euro woodland, Mediterranean scrubland, Rocky Mountains, Florida swamps, and Malaysian jungle). Each layout has animals and insects that are active at night. When you open a pop-up page, sounds that you would hear in that habitat play (e.g. wolves, cicadas). The sounds do not play continuously but, with a slight manipulation of the page, can easily be played again. Between each pop-up layout is a page with a numbered diagram to help identify the species featured, along with more information.

This book could be a favorite that grows with a child, as the colorful pop-ups and sounds will entertain when young, and the info and topic could be discussed when older. The sounds are nice b/c they aren't continuous, and battery replacement is an option.

The pop-ups are very nice with animal movement or springing up from the page. I do not feel the pop-ups are lacking, but they aren't as dazzling as some of the paper engineering out there.

My 15 month old grandson loves all of Maurice Pledgers pop up books with sounds. We look at them over and over and they are the first books he pulls out to look at. He has learned the names of most of the animals pictured and is very gentle with the book. After reading other reviews it is nice to know they are enjoyed by older kids too.
He is to young to follow a story line but he loves the colorful pictures and realistic sounds. I think there are 4 books with sounds from this author and we have them all.

I bought this book for my 16 month old daughter because she is into "animal sounds" and we both love Maurice Pleger books. It is our first Maurice Pledger sounds book. It think it has become her new favorite (and we have ALOT of books!!!!)

The sounds are interesting and pretty realistic for this type of media. The pictures are amazing. If you open and close it slightly the animals move and the sounds keep playing. The whole experience is incredibly lifelike and multisensory. Because my daughter is so young we just turn the pages and name the main animals in the scene and try to copy the sounds ourselves, but I like that she will get more and more out of it as she gets older.

This is a wonderful break from "baby books" and will fascinate toddlers as well as older children. It can be discussed as in a simple or complicated way and would help develop vocabulary in children at many different developmental levels. Unlike the touch-and-feel adventures, however, I do not leave this book when she can get it to look at by herself. This book would be easily destroyed by a younger child left unsupervised. Even when she is with me she wants to pull at the pop-ups because she is used to books with flaps that lift, but we get to learn another good concept - "gentle!"

I am definately going to collect the other Maurice Pledger "Sounds" books and recommend this one highly!

This is areally lovely pop up book with sounds. It's best if a parent supervises a small child who has this book so the child does not destroy the intricate pop ups. A great book for bedtime reading or when reading with a child. The sounds are great. My children 6 and 8 enjoyed it immensely. Includes details about the habitats and behaviors of the animals in the book.

This is a wonderful book to acquaint children with nature. I work with a child in READS and he is almost a non reader. He loved that book. We took turns reading the pages. MaryOlt

I ordered this book because I was familiar with other pop up books with sound that were created by this author. This one does not disappoint--the pictures are beautiful and detailed, and the sound effects are wonderful.

First of all, I bought this book because I, my self, love pop up books. I picked the Sounds of the Wild for my baby grandson before he was even bourn. The pictures are amazing and so are the sounds. Let's don't stop there though, It is stuffed full of facts. I started showing the book when my grandson was only a few months old. He seemed captivated by the sounds and pictures. We had to turn the pages over and over again. Now he is 2 1/2 and were are reading the book together.

I have been looking for another book similar to this one for his baby brother. The difficult part is deciding wether I want the wild birds or the ocean sounds. I know he will love it just as much as his older brother. You need supervision with smaller children. They want to tug on the pop-ups. Don't miss out on such a wonderful book. Save me one though!

Sounds of the Wild is a wonderful book. The sounds are very clear, the pictures are great, and the popups look and work well. To be enjoyed by all ages, whether reading or not. We expected much less for the price.

I initially saw this book while on vacation at a museum store. I bought other books, but did not want to pack this book and risk damage by baggage handlers. When I returned home, I checked Amazon who had a much better price for the book. Imagine my surprise that there were others in the series. This book is well made with sturdy paper pop-ups. Some pop-up books are so delicate, they tear with the first touch. This one not only is quality paper, but the sounds were realistic and fun. I think I'm just a kid at heart and was just fascinated with the book. I "guess" I'll give it to one of my nieces who loves pop up books, with the caveat that she has to share it with me! LOL. I also plan on ordering the Jungle, Birds and Ocean ones so my other nieces and nephews will have their own books.

I would highly recommend this particular book. I have no hesitation to buying the other books in the series since I am so impressed with the quality, color, sounds and liveliness of the pop-up books.

This is such a great book for so many reasons. It has the real names of all the of the critters and engages my kids. They ask questions and point out things they find. A must have!!
