5.0 out of 5 stars The reason God made guitars
I didn't realize there was a first collection of this music until I saw Sounds of Wood & Steel 2 so I bought it to see what it was like. My husband and I love it! We enjoy the way the artists describe the reasoning behind the songs they chose as well as knowing what make and key their Taylor was played in. 2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing compared to the first volume
The sound quality is great and the playing is top-notch. However, only a handful of tracks here (including "Caroline, No" Elliot Easton, "Liz & Opie" Victor Wooten, "Wings of the Morning" Doyle Dykes and maybe one or two more) seem inspired. Taken on it's own terms, the collection overall sounds pleasant enough but the weaker tracks...

I didn't realize there was a first collection of this music until I saw Sounds of Wood & Steel 2 so I bought it to see what it was like. My husband and I love it! We enjoy the way the artists describe the reasoning behind the songs they chose as well as knowing what make and key their Taylor was played in. I particularly enjoyed Richie Sambora's sound due to the description of the song's origination. I plan on ordering the first collection since we have enjoyed this one so much. This is wonderful music to enjoy your day or evening by. It's sure to please anyone who plays guitar or just loves to hear that awesome sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful music, January 15, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Sounds of Wood & Steel 2 (Audio CD)
If you like, even just like, acoustic guitar you will like this record. The perfect record for a candlelight dinner or peaceful quite evenings. I love just about every song on this record. Lovely, intricate guitar playing.

Listening to this record on the couch, with the lights off and my eyes closed, makes me feel like I am lying by a crackling creek, in the grass, under a blue sky, temperature about 80 degrees, when I was ten years old.

5.0 out of 5 stars WindHam Hill & Taylor Guitars!, March 30, 2000
This review is from: Sounds of Wood & Steel 2 (Audio CD)
I own both the 1st "wood & steel" compilation CD and the 2nd effort. All I can say, is they might be the BEST solo guitar, finger-style compilations produced. This is a fantastic production from renouned new age label WindHam Hill. All players are playing their Taylors'. What a great idea!

As an owner of a Taylor 512, and fan of many of these artists, i found these compilations to be essential to my collection.

You wont be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars great stuff!, November 25, 2004
This review is from: Sounds of Wood & Steel 2 (Audio CD)
What's not to like about this compilation? I'm not at all sure why some reviewers were "disappointed" by this cd. I'm thrilled to have so many leads to all of this talent. One shouldn't expect to like every tune on a cd such as this, because there are so many different styles, but I feel that the producers did an amazing job keeping the tone very similar, so that one can enjoy this cd from beginning to end. Keep in mind, too, that this type of music is designed to be background for reading, or writing a letter, or doing a puzzle, or studying, or just relaxing. It's SUPPOSED to be unobtrusive. It's not supposed to be mindblowing or alter your consciousness. It's just supposed to set a mood and help you mellow out, and it certainly does that artfully.

4.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Collection of Guitar Instrumentals, September 18, 2005
This review is from: Sounds of Wood & Steel 2 (Audio CD)
This second volume of the SOUNDS OF WOOD & STEEL series is a simply wonderful album of guitar instrumentals. As with the previous volume, each song features Taylor guitars (which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 1999 when this CD was released).

There are numerous highlights, including Taylor co-founder Bob Taylor's rendition of "After the Gold Rush." [Note: Neil Young was an early proponent of the Taylor guitar.] Also, Elliot Easton's performance of "Caroline No" is amazing. Easton chose the song because of his working relationship with Brian Wilson (he has performed and recorded with Wilson) and his belief that it is the "prettiest pop ballad ever." In addition, the Hawaiian slack-key flavor of "The Island" performed by Jim Messina (with Kenny Loggins sittin' in providing wordless vocals) is a real joy.

Bottom line, there isn't a weak cut in the bunch. And don't be misled by the fact that this CD was released on the new age Windham Hill label. There's no navel-gazing guitar noodling here--just musicians sharing their love of guitars. Very satisfying. [Running Time - 47:47] HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

A guitar-playing friend turned me on to this CD and the first Wood&Steel. The music is marvelous. The musicianship is top tier. You will not be disappointed in either 1 or 2.

This review is from: Sounds of Wood & Steel 2 (Audio CD)
I own all three volumes and only wish I had discovered them when they first came out. I love acoustic guitar and these are by far some of the most relaxing and beautiful volumes of such available. When you listen to any of them you are transported into a warm delightful place where your senses are awakened by the wonderful rhythmic sounds from the various artist. Your soul will thank you every time you sit and listen to these wonderful recordings.

I have bought this CD, actually, around my Richie Sambora-Collection to complete. All of course Richie Sambora at the head 'see "Ava`s Eyes". A jewel of his creating which documents the big love to his daughter once more. But also the rest can absolutely see itself, sorry, allow to hear. A wonderful CD for switching off, dream and a lot more. To recommend very much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soothing and Informative, August 16, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sounds of Wood & Steel 2 (Audio CD)
I bought this CD to give me inspiration while learning the guitar on my own. The price is right, and it gives me something to shoot for. I think the guitarists use Taylor guitars, but I find my Ibanez sounds just as good. Especially for the money. Also, a good value.
