This review is from: Soundscapes (Audio CD)
Made in UK in 2003, Serial# SMDCD-458, Playing Time 93:56This 2-CD anthology of Ant's work lifts material from 15 different albums, up to the "Private Parts & Pieces X: Soirée" album. Unfortunately, the artwork at the back of the CD that lists the track content has a few (but key!) mistakes on it: "Heart Of Darkness" is in fact "Dawn Over The Lake", from the "A Catch At The Tables" album; an ever bigger disappointment, especially for those who don't have the "Sail The World" album, is the substitution of "Opening Theme From Sail The World" by an edited version of "Reaper", which leaves us with no trace of any track from the "Sail The World" CD. This compilation features both short (1 or 2 minutes) tracks and long ones (the 17-minute+ "Chinese Walls"), and the material chosen here is mostly acoustic. I think that those familiar with Anthony Phillips' albums will be disappointed by this budget compilation (there's room for another hour of music on here!); for those unfamiliar with his work, this is possibly as good of a place to start as any... The inside booklet doesn't credit the "original" albums, so the listener won't be able to look up the original source of the track (i.e. "Bleak House" taken from "Sides" album, etc.) If you're one of those people who want to "complete" their AP collection, and you're missing out on the "The Anthem From Tarka" single from the original "Tarka" album, it can be found here (as well as on the 1-CD "Anthology" compilation). If you enjoy generally soft (and mostly acoustic) music, I think you'll enjoy this set... it might perhaps stimulate you into buying full albums, and AP has many that are sure to please...
