If you are a college student sick and tired of "gender, gay culture, or feminist" ideology sneaking into every damn textbook you are assigned these days, here's one more to add to the junk pile.

This book is supposed to be about the world's music yet Shelemay presents too many obscure examples of music ensembles no one has heard of. Then she tries to spin her own opinions into the "significance" of their music. Her agenda doesn't stop there. Shelemay seems obsessed with "gender" and even surprised that most or all traditions of the world are based on normal male/female roles. She goes out of her way to include a photo of two men dancing polka to point out "gender flexibility"--when in reality the photo simply depicts two men joking around. Shelemay tries to downplay traditional male/female roles as if it is some archaic idea from the stone age even while describing music and dance traditions in places such as Middle East, India, China, Africa--she must be nuts!

You will learn more about the world's rich musical heritage with a different textbook, one without so much author bias and personal agenda.

2.0 out of 5 stars Soundscapes, September 7, 2010

The CDs came quickly and in a timely manner. I am frustrated because I received the CDs and all of them work except the third one. The third one is a CD that is a burnable CD that someone put the label on and it is an empty disk. So I paid for three disks and only got two so I am pretty pissed about it.
