5.0 out of 5 stars Petty hits Blu-ray
The most underrated Blu-ray release I have found in quite some time. With hardly any fanfare this gem slipped into my collection last week. What the case nor slipcover say is that the audio is DTS-HD MA and wow.. does she shine. Video is fantastic also. I am not a huge Petty fan but I am becoming one with this concert.

The songlist:

Baby please...

2.0 out of 5 stars Shows how much tom has changed...
I can't sit through this concert. Tom is so fried out or just losing his mind. The grunting that passed for singing would have made ozzie feel bad for him.The price and nostalgia are the only things that got this a second star

5.0 out of 5 stars Petty hits Blu-ray, January 7, 2009
This review is from: Soundstage: Petty, Tom & The Heartbreakers [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)

Baby please don't go
Crawling back to you
Handle with care
I won't back down
I'm cryin'
Angel dream
Melinda
Born in Chicago
Red Rooster
Carol
Refugee
Love is a long road
You don't know how it feels
Black leather woman
I done somebody wrong
I got a woman
Thirteen days
Wake up time
Rollin' in my sweet baby's arms
Lost children
Two men talkin'
You wreck me

An additional 8 songs in the extras which are also concert footage, some from the Sound Stage concert and some from a different concert. All of these are also DTS-HD MA. If you are a Petty fan or not you will get much enjoyment from this disc. Finally some good music on Blu-ray is here!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Mix & Musicians Make It An Entertaining Show, April 27, 2009

First, this concert looks just beautiful in high-definition. You can see all the details in the Indian rugs on which the band stands, for instance. It also sounds pretty darn good, too, thanks to the terrific musicians in Tom Petty's band. Mike Campbell on lead guitar and Benmont Tench on keyboards were particularly good, I thought.

Petty has never had that good a voice but yet he's interesting to hear and he comes across as a real likable guy. All of the group's members, which also include bassist Ron Blair and guitar-harmonic-harmony vocals Scott Thurston and drummer Steve Ferrone all look like they're having a good time. I suspect they usually do when they're playing.

Everybody has their favorites songs of each artist and group and, at least in this concert, mine was "Melinda," which featured fantastic piano by Tench and an interesting guitar sound from Campbell. You can't go wrong either with rock "oldies" like "Baby, Please Don't Go" and "Born In Chicago," "Red Rooster" and "I Got A Woman." There is a good mix of fast and slow, rock and blues and ballads.....all adding up to an entertaining show.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely STUNNING!!!, February 17, 2009
This review is from: Soundstage: Petty, Tom & The Heartbreakers [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Well here we go guys. I think I have quite possibly discovered the find of the year. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers on SOUND STAGE. Picked it up Sunday at SEARS. I don't know where to begin. Lets just say if you don't have it GET it! If you do have it I am preaching to the choir. I have the Tom Petty Box Set and listen to it when the mood srikes. Not a huge Petty fan but do like his stuff that has not been played to death on top forty. Saw him in 2008 mainly to see Winwood who opened for him. The Show was good but nothing that gave me goose bumps. This DVD gave me goose bumps and actually brought tears to my eyes on Melinda. This DVD is probably the most polished best recorded DVD on the market today. The color on the stage is un-freakingbelievabl. No I am NOT kidding! The two songs that will blow you away are Melinda and Two Men Talking. I HIGHLY recomend this disc to anyone who truely enjoys REAL music. Let me know what you all think.

4.0 out of 5 stars The rhythm guitar on the right is a bit underrecorded, May 19, 2011

This review is from: Soundstage: Petty, Tom & The Heartbreakers [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
While our music/movie room gets more use from operas and classical music, I do have a few rock and jazz blu-rays (Chris Botti, Legends of Jazz, Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds etc.)
I saw part of this performance on TV in my living room with only a 4.0 setup, but I liked it enough to order the blu-ray.
Upon hearing the DTS-MA sound track now twice in our 7.1 setup, I found the recording mix a tad unbalanced. The rhythm guitar on the right when viewed from the audience is often not loud enough compared to all the other instruments/voices.
You can hear it best when comparing "I got a woman" to "13 days". The mix on "13 days" is much better.
Everything else is well recorded and I still enjoyed it. But it can get only 4 stars from me.

It's hard to understate the Quality of the Audio, Video, and Band Performance of this disc. Special treat: make sure to catch the Benmont Tench piano solo on "Melinda". A true Demo disc to wow your friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Five star to one star, September 8, 2010
This review is from: Soundstage: Petty, Tom & The Heartbreakers [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
It doesn't play anymore! All of a sudden I started getting an error message that said incompatable. I love this Bluray and am perplexed why it did this. I played many plays with no problems. It did it once, played a bunch of times more, and now will not play at all. Any suggestions? I just might buy it again because I think it is such a great performance and fine sonics. I'd really like to get my money back but I think the chance of that is slim to none since its over thirty days and who gives money back on an open disc anyway?
