Fantastic!,

Not getting into a review of the show itself (which is fantastic and if it comes to these American shores, everyone should watch it) but this soundtrack is a fantastic collection of 80s music from the earlier part of the decade. Unlike a lot of 80s collections which have the same songs we've heard a billion times from Culture Club, Flock of Seagulls, etc. this truly good music that if you have seen the show know matches perfectly. But even if you've never seen the show you can't beat a collection like this with music by more popular acts like David Bowie and the Clash, alongside lesser known but just as good tracks from ultravox, Flying Lizards and Joe Jackson. Its a great nostalgia kick for those who remember it, and for people who love 80s music pick this up... and watch the show.

One of the great pleasures of the terrific show LIFE ON MARS was the 70's era music. ASHES TO ASHES, a very good follow-up show to LoM, and another chance to enjoy naughty tough guy Gene Hunt, has nifty 80's music to go with it. For me, it's a blast from my youthful past. I was in my 20's in the 80's, and this was the musical era of college, falling in love, marriage, and other transitions. The Dexy's Midnight Riders song was unfamiliar to me, but I liked it better than their more famous Come On, Eileen. Much. It's always great to hear Bryan Ferry, naturally. And David Bowie. And Joe Jackson's voice makes me feel 22 again. [...]. I hope they can get this in for a less pricey price. Yowza. But the 80's pleasure is there for the taking. I do think they could have added some more songs. I mean, if you're gonna do the soundtrack, just do it. Put all the songs from the show. Also...where's SAME OLD SCENE!? After hearing it on AtoA, I went and put the track on to listen to it ...again. Great song. Why not here? Ah, well.

I picked this up used and did NOT pay sticker price. It's overpriced, in my opinion--even for an import. Realize also that if you go to the Ashes to Ashes website (I think it's still there; I did this on BBC America over one month ago) you can link into a list of songs from EACH episode of the last season and go straight to a specific download site to buy the specific tunes you want. Now finding the right VERSION can be tricky. I wanted Behind the Green Door, from an episode near end of season. There are numerous versions of that available for downloadable purchase. The show's website doesn't necessarily tell you WHICH version they used! So that can become an adventure. But at THIS sticker price, it's more affordable and satisfying PERHAPS than this CD. What is on here is great music for the 1980's, but many of the episodes near end of season are not included here, I don't believe, on the CD.
