This review is from: Soundtrack (Audio CD)
Well, this album sounds very akin to Bluebird's other esoteric opus, the 2001 Black Presence. Mostly instrumental with a peculiar mix of heavy guitar, bass, drums, vibraphone and even some horn. The best song on the album is Glass, which is representative of the glassy conditions for excellent surf which is the film this album is the soundttrack for. Like I said, some nice horn thrown in there with an excellent back track of vibraphone and a hypnotic driving guitar. Mellow, yet also an adrenaline boost. A Good Ride is more like a bluesey psychadelic throwback to early ZZ Top. Accidental Progress, We Are Stylemasters and the brilliant Transporter all highlight yet another adventure for Bluebird that reaches far beyond their fundamental punk hardcore roots. You'd never know this is the same band that jams on Hot Blood. But like I said, very similar to Black Presence, most notably with the use of the vibraphone and even some subtle horn sections. I count only one real klunker song on Stylmasters. Overall, the album packs in a lot of time and similar to Black Presence (which had about half its songs appear in another surf film, Singlefin: Yellow), Stylmasters is a great album for long trips and since it follows virtually the entire lineup that was presented in the film, it's easy to visualize the images from the documentary. No suprises though, if you've seen the film, the music roster is identical, but that's good. Sound quality much, much better on the CD than in the DVD. And the more you listen, the more nuanced sounds you start to pick up. Nice work.
