Recorded at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival, the movie soundtrack was released in 1960 and is a stunning compilation of the artists who were titans then and whose influence reverberates today.
Louis Armstrong deservedly has four of the 16 numbers, with two cuts each from Mahalia Jackson and Anita O'Day. But it is Chuck Berry's rocking rendition of Sweet Little Sixteen that steals the show. The cool jazz sounds of Gerry Mulligan, Thelonious Monk and Sonny Stitt are captivating, while Dinah Washington proves why she was "Queen of the Blues" on All of Me. Not just for summertime, the soundtrack is fantastic whenever smooth grooves are needed to warm up the day.

This CD is a delight. I wasn't sure I would enjoy it as much as the DVD / Movie of the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival but the odd pairings and not-always-strictly-jazz songs do hold up fine stripped of the film images. If you loved the movie, buy this CD. If you just love music in general and this group of artists seems intriguing, buy this CD. If you just ran across the title, Jazz on a Summer's Day, and know nothing about how it all came together, do a little research before you hit the One Click Buying button. Do you like Monk, Scat singing, or maybe Gospel mixed in with your trad jazz? If so you'll get a true kick out of watching Chuck Berry trade licks with a clarinet player. Go cats go.

A somehow timeless snapshot of time. Did I mention the music?,

Anyone that's seen the film knows what I mean in my headline. It's a magical little capturing and could be loved for that aspect alone. But uh... there's kinda more, shall we say. And by that, I mean that there's... oh, ya know... performances from Louis Armstrong, Thelonious Monk, those kinds of folks...
A great collection of music from a great film.

The most ridculous thrown-together CD ever. One listening and it landed in the waste basket. My Gawd!
