Where does one begin? Well you start at the bottom of the mountain and work your way up.
This score is without doubt a classic of 20th century music. The composer Max Steiner is at the height of his musical prowess and has pulled no punches in delivering a robust, exciting, yet deeply emotional score. From the very outset you are drawn into the very dangerous but exciting mexican locale with the powerful main title. The businesslike but volatile friendship of the three amigos is wonderfully displayed in the "The Trek" and the sharp threatening theme for the bandits is one of the highlights of the score. Indeed the sheer wealth of musical diversity on show here is at times astounding. This composer was truly a genius at underscoring any given situation. "Texas memories" for example is one of the most beautiful and lingering themes you are ever likely to hear. The score sounds fresh for its vintage and is far superior to the well performed but slightly staid re-recording released on Marco polo records a few years back. This is the genuine article and you just cant get better than that. A wonderful testament to a wonderful film. Plaudits to Rhino for having the good sense to deliver this nugget to partisan ears. A'int no one gonna put one over on them!
