This is my first experience with Celldweller, and I wasn't quite sure what to expect. Primarily instrumental, this sounds like Mortal Kombat meets Pig meets Marilyn Manson from the soundtrack to "Resident Evil".The only song featuring lyrics (aside from the remixes of the same track) is 'Birthright'. The song is decent and a definite sing-along, but not Klayton's strongest effort. Several of the accompanying tracks are short in length and sound as though they were written for a video game. I've dabbled in electronica myself, and it's not that difficult to layer several voices into a single track. When you don't really have a 4-minute song, a few layered voices can make up a 1:30 filler worth listening to yet isn't terribly deep or memorable. There are a handfulof these on "Soundtrack for the Voices in my Head", but that doesn't ruin the album the way it would if the entire record were made up of 1:30 filler tracks. Instead, they seem to fill the gap and solidify the flow of the album. I wouldn't call it a 'concept' album, but Klayton is on the right track (pun intended). Because this record is written like a heavy-metal movie score (another reference to the similarities of Manson's work on "Resident Evil") there is a certain feel the album captures from the angry opener "Through the Gates" to the melancholy and reflective "La Puerta Del Diablo". Ignore the 'bonus tracks' as these are rehashed remixes of "birthright" and really don't belong on the record. This will never be a 'favorite' album, but it's very enjoyable with a few tracks meriting special attention. "Solaris" was my inspiration to give Celldweller a try in the first place and has a traditional Paul Oakenfold meets NIN feel to it. "The Angel of 10" is pure genius and feels like 5 beers on a Friday night. "Outland" is perhaps the most complex song on the album and will wear you down. Finally, "La Puerta Del Diablo" is a freakishly creepy track that sounds like AP2 meets Brad Fiedel's "Terminator 2" score. "Soundtrack" is not something that would really fit in at a party simply because it deserves more respect than background music. It's not the most original music you'll ever hear (hence the number of comparisons mentioned above) but it'll hold your attention in a good way. 4 stars.

Having followed the career of Klayton Scott through his previous and current incarnations has once again paid off. The sheer creativity and inventiveness of his melodies and rhythm continue to astound me.Klayton has chosen with this disc to issue a soundtrack geared album. It songs contain some of the elements you may be able to recognize from his previous endeavors and still remain very fresh and new. To put it simply, This disc is a tremendous portfolio of what Klayton could bring to the table in negotiating for a big-distribution, multimedia-project movie or game soundtrack. The only reason I gave this 4 out of 5 stars, instead of 5, is the fact that these are soundtrack pieces which, though I can imagine/visualize the game, movies and show scenes which could be created to fit the sounds, simply is without external connections which completes a score or soundtrack. I sincerely hope this collection would lead Klayton to landing a contract to produce for a specific product, and I know Birthright has been licensed. I just don't feel many of todays games are in sync with many of the nuances Klayton has produced here. Until Klayton has secured such a deal, I'll be rocking out to his other works.

This will give fans a slight fix till the "real" new CD comes out ! There is very little vocals, its more or less a sound track, hence the title. Good music by a great (unknown to most) band.

Not Quite on Par with First Effort,

Here, the vocals that gave the first album a heart-aching beauty are gone. The music is a bit darker, but that means fewer hooks to sink teeth into. Overall, it's good mood music, kind of like Nine Inch Nails' "Ghosts."

This is my first Celldweller album. I bought it after hearing one of the songs come on my NIN Pandora channel. I must say, this stuff is really good. It's such a crazy mix of sounds, its difficult to explain. Kinda like Nine Inch Nails, meets Skrillex, meets TSO. Through em all into a shake n' bake bag and here you go. The music is deep and engrossing. If you just zone out and listen, it will put you somewhere else if you know what i mean. I rarely hear music anymore that can do that... Tool, NIN and a few obscure electronic artists, and thats about it. Klayton should be making music for games or something. This music, and his appearent attention to detail can't go unnoticed for long. This isn't a good review, I know. If you listen to the album, you will understand. It's good, its really damn good. It's just kinda hard to put into words. Different maybe? Engrossing? I dunno. I would highy recommend Celldweller to anyone looking for some superb electronica music, or even industrial/prog rock listeners. Personally, I will be purchasing some more music from Klayton very soon.

There are lots of tracks on this disc, but note that there are a few tracks that are just remixes of other tracks (5 & 15, 2 & 16 & 21, etc.) and some are very short (#12 is 13 seconds, 1/2 are under 2 min). Note also that there are almost no lyrics on the whole album. The sound is, overall, pretty different from their 2004 eponymous album. Similar in some ways, and yet very different. Still, it's a fun ride and if you like electronic sounding songs, then you may like it. I do :)

I Love This Album.,

I got Celldweller's first album along with this one. I didn't really know what to expect from this CD. It's mostly all instrumental except for the song Birthright & you can heat Klayton slightly screaming on a few tracks. That said, I really enjoy it. Stand out tracks to me are: ,(It actually sounds like it would fit with the Final Fantasy: Advent Children movie, in my opinion.) Pursuit of The Hunted, Ursa Minor (Electron Mix), Subterra, Outland, & Descent. The titles for these songs are very fitting for the tone/mood. Highly recommend this CD.

Another excellent work from Klayton. He didn't put many lyrics or normal length songs in this album though. Klayton evolves every year so there is hardly any comparison to earlier works of his but the track lengths and over all track layout is much different. I expected something very different after waiting several years since the last album. With that said, am I disappointed? Well very very little. But not enough to take a star away from a 5 star rating.

This album is amazing and totally worth buying. Although it lacks to bonus tracks that are only included with the original mp3 download version off the official site. One of those songs is the fully instrumental version of 'Birthright'. If you don't really want this, then this album is the one to buy. But if you are searching for it, then try looking for an official download copy online or try to purchase it at a store.

An Amazing Addition to the Celldweller Discography,
By
This review is from: Soundtrack for the Voices in My Head, Vol. 1 (Audio CD)
The Detroit, Michigan based musical wizard Scott Albert or better known as Klayton strikes again. This one man project has evolved into a well oiled and widely respected phenomena. Celldweller has aired it's music in commercials, movies, video games and even a trailer during a Super Bowl. Fans continue to flock to this hybrid of Techno/Trance laced Rock/Metal and for good reason as it is easily some of the most original music you'll ever find.Soundtrack for the Voices in my Head is an album ALL Celldweller fans will enjoy. That said some caution as this album is instrumental and has very little or no vocal work on most the tracks. I expected this to be a collection of Techno songs mastered by Klayton but I was gladly surprised to find that this has the same Metal/Rock influences mixed into the electronica. Where the vocals are they shine and Klayton's vocals are better then ever, addictive and will have you singing along in no time. Songs such as Solaris and Descent have a heavier Popish Metal sound showing that Klayton still wants to keep that edge to his music. While others like Ursa Minor and Surgical rely more on the dark Techno style that Klayton has mastered like no other. The album has a little bit of everything we all love as Celldweller fans and in my opinion is the perfect album for those of us that are dying to hear new material. Furthermore towards the end of the album are easily some of the best Remixes by Klayton to date and are so well done they are practically stand alone songs rather then remixes. When it comes down to it Celldweller is easily one of my favorite groups around. Most especially because I myself am from the Detroit area where Klayton is from so I support his efforts as much as possible. If you are a fan of his music at all I advise picking this up soon, it is an amazing album of completely original and new tracks by Celldweller. If you get the oppourtunity I advise seeing them live as well, they put on an amazing show. As far as new fans go I would advise buying the self titled album first or buy it with this. Thanks for reading and I hope my review helped you to see how great this album is, also see my review for Celldweller's amazing debut album Celldweller. -A loyal Klayton fan. |
