Far More Reveries than Recipies,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Soup Peddler's Slow and Difficult Soups: Recipes and Reveries (Paperback)
If you think you are buying a book filled with recipies you are mistaken. In its 181 pages there are 35 recipies--wonderful and tasteful.
If you are intersted in reading David Ansel's reveries, then this is primarily what the book is about. They are fascinating. Since I expected to find more or the former and less of the latter, I was disappointed.

Viva Soup/Viva Life,
This review is from: The Soup Peddler's Slow and Difficult Soups: Recipes and Reveries (Paperback)
This book is a rare treasure that brings together love for good food and a contagious love for life. I don't consider myself a cook, but the Soup Peddler makes it so easy, you can't miss. You'll be glad you bought this book, and so will all the people who get to share your soup!

I read this book from cover to cover in one evening. My report is that it was a spellbinding and thrilling experience since I live in the vaunted and character-filled "Bouldin Creek" neighborhood. David not only did us justice (yes, I am the haiku priestess...), but the recipes are great as well. You will not regret buying this book!

If you love soup, armchair travel, and writers with wit and vocabulary to match, you must read this book! I knew next to nothing about Texas except my sister lives in Kerrville. After reading Soup Peddler's book, I know that I absoulutely will visit Austin, Texas (specifically Bouldin Creek) in the future and I will swim at Barton Springs!
Great recipes, stories, characters, conflict, a cookbook with everything! I predict that foodies and soupies from across America and the world will descend on Austin like a plague of locusts in order to say they have been to Bouldin Creek and actually seen the land of the Soupies.

This is a well-written, easy-reading HILARIOUS book that gives one a magnified glimpse into the life of an Austinite. The characters David reveals, the places to which he takes you, and the adventures he shares are guaranteed to give you that "warm, fuzzy feeling". Oh -- and the soup recipes are great, too! I haven't tried all of them, but the ones I *have* tried are delicious. Get this book, and be weird vicariously!

So well-written,

David's writing is almost better than his soup. I notice this everytime I read something of his, whether the weekly Soupie email, article or something else. He beautifully brings to life the South Austin scene, and does it without condescending, something non-Texans seem hard-pressed to avoid. In fact, his love for the landscape and people in his adopted home comes through in every paragraph. For this, for his soup, for his talent with the written word, I am eternally grateful.

It looks as good as it tastes,

The first thing that I noticed about this book was the striking illustration style. The quirky characters and mouth watering recipes were perfectly brought to life by the talented illustrator, Liza Ferneyhough. I can't wait to see more of her work adorning pages throughout my local bookstore.

I adjusted my part-time work schedule just so that I could align my day off with The Soup Peddler's pick-up hours and pick up my weekly soup. This is how much my family and I love David Ansel's soups. I am thrilled to own this book, especially because it has the recipes of some of my Soup Peddler favorites (Bouktouf, Armenian Apricot, Pumpkin Pear Puree, Saffron Risotto, and Cucumber Mint). This book is such a beautiful tribute to our beautiful city of Austin, TX. Thank you, David!

This is a truly great cookbook. In my experience soup recipes are sometimes afterthoughts, as if soup isn't worth the attention of a main course, but these have been carefully considered, and tested extensively on many happy Austinites. The story behind the author's soup business and regional Austin flavor is entertaining as well, so this book makes a great gift.

This book was not only a great read, but also the recipes are wonderful (and not difficult at all). Kudos to Mr. Ansel (the author) on pursuing his dream/destiny and bringing not only great soup to the citizens of Austin but a great read to all of us wish to pursue a dream and eat well!
