After twenty minutes I had enough,

Maybe the movie would be better with actors better suited to the material, but I found the main characters off-puttingly petty, venal, loud, and obnoxious. Mind you, I love Curb Your Enthusiasm, which parades all those qualities and worse before the viewer, but as a high concept movie it does not work. The pacing is mediocre, the characters are boring, and the premise is inadequate for a feature length movie. I watched this with a friend who is also a fan of Larry David but neither of us could go the distance.

Seinfeldesque! A hilarious comedy!,

Steven Weber and Criag Beirko play wonderfully side by side in this side-splitting comedy about best-friend cousins--until one of them, Richie (Beirko), wins a jackpot with his cousin Evan's (Weber) quarters. The antics that follow clearly take the path of a typical "Seinfeld" episode. The most lovable charcter is Richie's mother who worries non stop about her son and would have to be killed if something would happen to her son--like if he got a brain tumor! If you were a fan of "Seinfeld," and then again, who wasn't, don't miss "Sour Grapes."

The only time I saw this movie was when I rented it; I have since bought it. I didn't see it at the movies because the critics slaughtered it, and I wish I had now. It is a very funny movie, written of course by the co-creator of Sienfield, so expect the twists and turns that Sienfield was infamous for, but with a more adult edge. You will find yourself laughing out loud, almost guiltily, and if you don't, well, you're probably dead. It's pure fluff entertainment and worth the DVD's price. I give this movie five popcorn farts. Great stuff.

Very good Larry David movie pre-Curb.,

Years before Curb your Enthusiasm, and at the end of his Seinfeld run, Larry David creates a movie typical of his style. If you are a fan of Curb, and or a true fan of George, then you will appreciate this movie. It contains some quintessential Larry David-type moments, including those uncomfortable parts. Literally the first-half of this movie seems rather boring, perhaps it takes long to set-up the plot and establish characters. But the second-half is when we see a free-wheeling movie without those first-half encumbrances. You can see some of his Curb humor already in this 1998 movie. "Having said that," it is not a great must-have movie, but still worth it for the low purchase price.

I don't understand many of the negative reviews, this movie is brilliant....I can't say that's it's all that funny more clever than hilarious. The way the music is set to fit the scene is really over the top, love it

Let's be fair...,
This review is from: Sour Grapes (DVD)
Let's be fair. It's not Seinfeld or CYE. It IS TV humor and it doesn't really translate very well to a feature film. The premise is standard-mill Larry David and despite what the people who expect another Seinfeld say, it has the LD ring to it. Not terrible, and certainly not great, its an amateurish, mediocre movie...but still funny and ironic enough in parts to warrant a couple of stars.

a mix between Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm,
By
This review is from: Sour Grapes [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This movie combines the sillines of Seinfeld with the dark uncomfortabel type of humor in Curb Your Enthusiasm. For Seinfeld fans its a must. This movie is outrageous. From the vicious skewering of Friends to the observational humor that was a little too racy to make it on Seinfeld-terrific all around. While I love Curb Your Enthusiasm it was a shame this movie did so poorly because I don't know if Larry David will be given another movie opportunity.

Unrated movie!!!,

People compare this movie to Seinfeld but it is not, and doesn't try to be. Larry David's attempt to create a movie that is funny and offbeat certainly is a success. Craig Bierko is a great actor and really shines in some funny situations. Same thing with Weber. If you like Curb, then give this movie at least a rent. Not everyone has the sense of humor needed to enjoy a movie like this. Great Flick!

SPOILERS BEWARE*****
I don't know why this movie is so maligned- on imdb it gets only 5.4 out of 10. I LIKE this movie a lot. It's funny, it's very accurate in regards to human nature- people do DO this kind of stupid stuff all the time. And the irony in this movie is hilarious! In this movie one of the 2 cousins wins a jackpot on a slot machine in Atlantic City. The one playing the machine was originally playing only 1 quarter at a time. His friend & cousin tells him that the only way to go is at least 3 quarters. 2 pulls later, he's down to only 1 quarter--- he asks his cousin, "you got 2 quarters, I'm out." He gives them to him and then on the next pull of the handle, JACKPOT- over 400,000 dollars. Does he owe his cousin any money? That is the question that drives the plot of this movie. And the predicaments they get into are truly funny and their behavior is so true to real life that it's great. All the performances are fun and funny- especially Weber and Bierko. The used merchants sell this DVD for around $[2-5]... give it a try, I think you'll like it. Oh, and I think this is WAY funnier than "Curb your Enthusiasm!" |
