Product Description

Inositol and choline are B vitamin-like compounds which have similar functions. Both are important components of phospholipids, which make up cellular and other biological membranes, and both play a role in healthy nerve function. Choline is an essential ingredient for the production of acetylcholine, a principal neurotransmitter, while phosphorus-containing compounds of inositol in nerve cells help regulate nerve impulses.

I've worked extensively with choline-based cognition enhancers for the past three years. This includes various forms of alpha-GPC as well as time-release formulations of choline bitartrate. I also have considerable experience with formulations which have a similar objective, including things like piracetam as well as cholinesterase inhibitors like Huperzine-A and donepezil. Last, I have a lot of experience in supplementing these with nootropics like vinpocetane, which acts as a vasodillator to improve blood flow to the brain, also improving memory.

To recap briefly, choline-based supplements can augment the brain's supply of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter critical to cognitive and memory functions. They can be used in tandem with cholinesterase inhibitors, which slow the degradation of ACh and keep the overall levels in the brain somewhat higher. Things like piracetam and vinpocetane are not directly related to ACh but can work in tandem with choline-related supplements to further enhance the effects.

Inositol is not related to any of this but has benefits of its own, notably as a mild anti-depressant. For that matter, choline is useful in clearing the liver and resolving fatty liver disease, something helpful for recovering alcoholics and those who've simply binged too much. The two together are usually recommended as well as a supplement for anyone on a strict vegetarian diet, since such diets are likely to be lacking in choline and inositol.

My slight downgrade in the rating reflects my assessment of this supplement as a cognition enhancer. For general dietary purposes, and especially for recovering alcoholics, it is fine. Taken strictly as a cognition enhancer, though, the following observations may be significant:

I have been taking this product for a few months with a few other supplements for increased concentration and memory. I am a 40 year old female with no history of colon polyps - I have learned that I have developed many - MANY polyps that have appeared in a relatively short period of time as well as rapid growth of a mole (on the back of my neck). I recalled a mention of someone having rapid progression of a prostate issue when taking this product so I informed my husband of a possible risk with taking this product. I have learned that choline can cause polyps - more frequently in females. I believe this is what has happened to me. I have a referral to a specialist for my polyp problem, but I would like to warn other people of a potential problem when taking this supplement.
I don't know if my results are typical - but please be aware that there are studies that have linked choline to polyps in women.
This is unfortunate because I feel that this supplement does aid in mood and focus - I based my 5 star review on its functionality alone - unfortunately a negative side affect is the rapid growth of polyps. I believe it is everyone due diligence prior to taking any supplement to find out risks and benefits - i was semi informed because of another reviewers rapid progression with a prostate problem (although i don't have a prostate) i was able to quickly relate my polyp growth to this particular supplement. Thank you to that poster and I hope this helps anyone else to further look into the side effects prior to taking ANY supplement. Good Luck to everyone on finding a useful group of supplements to fit their needs.

Source Naturals Inositol/Choline is a nice find because it combines two common agents used in cognitive enhancement. The drawback is that the form of choline used (i.e., choline bitartrate) does not have the highest bioavailability. In other words, it doesn't absorb well under normal conditions. The way around this is choline alfoscerate, or Alpha-GPC - a similar precursor to acetycholine with higher bioavailability and the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier. It is significantly more expensive, but it works (and studies are available evidencing its benefits). If the price is too high, you can increase your intake of choline bitartrate, but I wouldn't do it with a combination supplement and I would definitely research the tolerance levels of doing such - (choline bitartrate is relatively safe at normal doses, but I'm not a physician).

Also, do not expect to have dramatic improvements in cognition with just choline bitartrate and inositiol - you will be disappointed. A real effort at doing such takes a battery of substances to accomplish, first and foremost would be a quality vitamin and mineral supplement with adequate daily water intake. Second, some form of physical activity on a routine basis (yes, exercise). Third, a diet that is a diet - in other words, do not reduce your food consumption, alter your food consumption to healthier habits (in fact, a caloric increase might be necessary with cognitive enhancement).

But take note that many nootropics (cognitive enhancers) work synergistically; namely, they require the presence of other substances to actually work - choline and inositol are synergistic, but other substances can be of great aid too.
