About a month ago - just in passing - my doctor gave me a bottle of 1mg Melatonin chewable tabs. For my whole life, I've had periods of sleeplessness and them periods when I sleep very well.
When I went to see him, it was for my routine annual physical and I have no idea why he just gave me these -- other than the fact that it's probably the only free drug he's ever gotten because he won't take "the good stuff" from drug reps!
Okay. I took two (so that's 2mg) of the chewables (same manufacturer as these) which worked fairly well. When I did wake up at 4 AM, I just let another melt under my tongue, and I drifted off. I woke up as though I had had a decent night's sleep, but I certainly was not a model for a TV ad where I had awakened REFRESHED and ready for a triathalon. I felt okay and not at all lethargic.
When I saw that Amazon carried the same manufacturer's Melatonin in a 2 MG TIME-RELEASE, I knew that these would be perfect. If the "chewables" worked, then time-release would be better because there would be a steady stream of Melatonin released over an 8 hour period. My logic was so good that I got two. That's 480 nights if I disregarded the warnings about continuous use.
Unfortunately, the first night, they didn't work at all. I was up all night. The second night, I did fall asleep, but when I awoke, I was ... not groggy ... but not full of energy either.
I stopped for two nights, and tried again, and this time I awoke are 3 AM, and just got up and read.
I'd give the chewables 4 stars, but with several caveats. Melatonin is a hormone that helps with adjustments to circadian rhythms. If your rhythms are in synch with nature, don't fix what ain't broken. If you have a periodic sleepless night, take the chewables (peppermint's good) if you think that you're going to be restless. If you take these time-released pills, you're assuming that you are going to have a sleepless night, and this may become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
So I'm back to the chewables a couple of times every two weeks - sometimes even when I'm exhausted from hiking or raking a continuous supply of leaves, Mother Nature's own time-released pain in the neck. The time-released just haven't released or, as I said and as silly as you may think, you may be up just waiting for them to kick in because you know that you should drift off. The only place I drift to at 2 AM is the fridge.
