4.0 out of 5 stars This Album Is Bangin', April 3, 2005
This review is from: The Source Presents Hip Hop Hits, Vol. 9 (Audio CD)
Most of the songs on here were hot. I am glad that I copped this.

1. Lil' Flip - Game Over - don't like the man, but I love this song. Also on the album "U Gotta Feel Me". 10/10
2. Akon feat. Styles P - Locked Up - a hot collabo; this was a Buzzworthy song (If you watch MTV, you know what Buzzworthy is). Also on Akon's album "Trouble" and Styles P's upcoming album "Time is Money". 10/10
3. Juvenile feat. Soulja Slim - Slow Motion - a hot jam in the summer; it's too bad that Soulja Slim could not live to see the success of this song. Also on Juvenile's album "Juve The Great". 9/10
4. Ludacris - Blow It Out - a song that disses Bill O'Reilly; good song, but outdated at this point. Also on the album "Chicken and Beer". 8/10
5. Mase - Welcome Back - his return song that was hot in the summer and a Buzzworthy joint. Also on the album "Welcome Back". 9/10
6. Petey Pablo - Freek-A-Leek - I STILL love this song!!! Lil' Jon always has a hot song; sounds similar to Usher's "Yeah". Also on the album "Still Writing In My Diary: 2nd Entry". 10/10
7. Houston feat. Chingy, I-20 and Nate Dogg - I Like That - I think that this is a really stupid song. Shoulda had Ludacris and Shawnna rather than Chingy and I-20. This should NOT be on this album. Also on Houston's album "It's Already Written". 3/10
8. Young Gunz - No Better Love - this is a REALLY old song. This should not be on there just for the fact that this is outdated. Also on the album "Tough Luv". 7/10
9. Twista - Overnight Celebrity - everybody hates this song, but I love it. Features Kanye West on the hook. Also on the album "Kamikaze". 10/10
10. Slum Village feat. Kanye West - Selfish - not as popular a asong as I expected, but I still like it. Also on Slum Village's album "Detroit Deli". 8/10
11. Mobb Deep - Got It Twisted - I love them and the song. It's too bad everybody hates the album. This is one of their best songs ever. Also on the album "Amerikaz Nightmare". 9/10
12. Ray Benzino - Bottles and Up - I like the song, but not the man. But at least this is better than Eminem's latest album. Also on the album "Arch Nemesis". 8/10
13. Lil' Scrappy - No Problem - a hot summer jam; another Buzzworthy song. Also on the album "Lil Jon presents: Trillville and Lil' Scrappy". 10/10
14. Lil' Wayne feat. Mannie Fresh - Bring It Back - hot collabo with the two Cash Money rappers. Didn't blow up the way "Go DJ" did but still a great song. Also on the album "The Carter". 8/10
15. T.I. - Rubberband Man - I STILL love this song! This was a Buzzworthy as well; I do not like Lil' Flip, so I support T.I. Also on the album "Trap Muzik". 10/10
16. Ray Benzino and The Untouchables - Don't Hate - another filler song; I stop the album after hearing "Rubberband Man". 2/10

Overall, I like this album, but should have included "Lean Back", "On Fire" and "Drop It Like It's Hot", rather than the songs that I gave low ratings.

2.0 out of 5 stars Getting Back On Track, January 26, 2005

This review is from: The Source Presents Hip Hop Hits, Vol. 9 (Audio CD)
"Hip Hop Hits Vol. 8" represented the lowest point for the once great series. It was the antithesis of everything that "Hip Hop Hits" was created. From that point, there is nowhere to go but up; and with "Hip Hop Hits Vol. 9" is starting to get the back on track. The album is nowhere near as good as the best in the series, like "Vol. 4 & 5", but is a slight step in the right direction.
(1) Lil' Flip "Game Over" B-. Not a brilliant rap song, but one not one without charms. Flip has a very relaxed feel that shines through and there is a meaning, if ever so slight, carried beneath the song. The last verse is where thing really get interesting thougth. "Sunshine" was also a much bigger hit with more meaning as well
(2) Akon "Locked Up" A. Bold beats alone give this song a haunting feel to it, backed with honest, dark and deep lyrics. There is a true sense of prison here that can be sensed from the begining. I don't know if Akon has been in prison, but he certainly captures it with weight and dimension.
(3) Juvenlie feat. Soulja Slim "Slow Motion" B-. I got excited when I saw Juvenlie on a return to the rap scene. This disapointed me though, nowhere in the league of his earlier work; it really wastes his talents. Nothing has quite equaled his "400 Degreez" LP (1998); with "Ha" and "Back That Azz Up". It's not good, but still memorable.
(4) Ludacris "Blow It Out" B. It's so refreshing when an artist holds nothing back and just lets everything out; no matter how offensive (i.e. Limp Bizkit's "Break Stuff"). This isn't a great track from Luda, but it's energy and the "take-no-prisoners" attitude make it an entertaining listen.
(5) Ma$e "Welcome Back" A-. During his five years in priesthood, Ma$e must have spent alot of time making creating his best raps. This is, by far, the best work he has ever done; closer to Will Smith and P. Diddy. The track is a refreshing, fun and cool breeze that remembers what hip hop is really about.
(6) Petey Pablo "Freel-A-Leek" B+. Another rap song from '04 that is just cool and sounds great. The "radio station premise" is clever and the production is top notch. It may have some very filthy content, yet that can be overlooked and lost in the cool vibe.
(7) Houston feat. Chingy, Nate Dogg and I-20 "I Like That" C+. The song starts out terific with a killer beat and some boldness, yet it gets dragged out and swamped by standard material that seems to have no real message. If nothing else, Houston remains likeable as an artist.
(8) Young Gunz "No Better Love" C+. The lighter tone makes the song better than some of their work, but still never impresses like it should. Roc-A-Fella will need a new top act to fill Jay-Z's shoes. The Young Gunz are not it, and Kanye West can not carry the entire label by himself.
(9) Twista "Overnight Celebrity" C+. The material and message have purpose, but never really take it anywhere different or new. Twista's speedy rapping is fun at first, but eventully begins to feel like a gimmick. "Slow Jamz" (w/ Kanye West and Jaime Foxx), which hit #1, would have been a much better track to use.
(10) Slum Village feat. John Legend "Selfish" C. This song did not even hit ANY charts; so why is it on a "hits album"? Content wise, the song is an uneven mix of hip-hop and R&B that never really gells into anything memorable. John Legend is a terrific vocalist and pianist; he should not be forced to collaborate with these mediocre rappers.
(11) Mobb Deep "Got It Twisted" B+. When 2000 rolled around, it looked like Mobb Deep was going to vanish. Good thing they came back. They are one of the few groups that knows how to make dark rap music. This song is a perfect example of their mastery; it sounds simple, yet carries much depth and dimension underneath it all. Mobb Deeo is one of the most underrated groups in the history of rap.
(12) Benzino "Bottles & Up" D+. I could not even find this song anywhere besides here. It's a Benzino song on a "Hip Hop Hits" album; enough said. Yes, he owns the magazine, but there were much better a bigger hits in 2004 than his own disposable junk.
(13) Lil' Scrappy "No Problem" B-. Lil' Jon's crunk beat is fun at first, but it grows redundent as the song goes on. We look beyond the flashy surface and realize that there isn't much left. Yet we are still left with some good, if unessacary, summer fun. A nice try, but could've used some more work.
(14) Lil' Wayne feat. Mannie Fresh "Bring It Back" B+. The Cash Money label has been very hit-or-miss latley; I'm glad to report that this is one of the better songs. Lil' Wayne's unique voice combined with Mannie Fresh's slick beat creates a very polished and refreshing track. Not in the same leauge as "#1 Stunna" or "Ha", but a very good single none-the-less.
(15) T.I. "Rubber Band Man" C+. This song is fun to listen to, but that still does not make it any better than average. Overall, there just isn't that much of a flow, and the lyrics don't offer anything that memorable. Despite what "Spin Magazine" says, he's too overpraised. He needs more to stand out from the crowd.
(16) Benzino & The Untouchables "Don't Hate" D. As usual, an awful Benzino track tacked on as a "bonus track". No reason to even include it, besides self promotion. Why not have bonus tracks by "classic" artists (like Slick Rick and Public Enemy)? It would be a nice finale to remind listeners of where hip-hop came from before artists like Benzino.
Bottom Line: **. The album still doesn't succeed because of a number of standard tracks, but it does show The Source find it's way back. Nelly, the Black Eyed Peas, OutKast, Jay-Z and Jadakiss made some of 2004's best rap music; yet they're all MIA on this album. And I know Benzino has his stupid fued, but Eminem, G-Unit, D12 and Lloyd Banks were dominant forces in '04 hip-hop who should be on this album. Maybe the "Hip Hop Hits" series can reagain it's greatness.

1.0 out of 5 stars Crap, June 21, 2005
By
This review is from: The Source Presents Hip Hop Hits, Vol. 9 (Audio CD)
Words can't describe how bad this is. However, I read reveiws for volume 8, and the reviewer pretty mucyh describes what I think, and I will quote him.....

"Well. Seems like these talentless, gold-toothed imbeciles are really getting rich from churning out this junk faster than Detroit churns out cars because dumb pre-teens and wiggers keep buying into this fad... so I'm going to cash in on it! Quick! Before it dies out! I'm going to make my OWN unlistenable, wretched pop-rap album!

So here I go, with the steps:

1.) Pick out stupid, laughable moniker (IE "Chingy", "Nelly", etc.). Hmm... how about "Dippety D"? I know, I know, it sounds like a Warner Brothers cartoon... but hey, this is what makes money, so who am I to argue?

2.) Go to the mall and buy $500 worth of oversized South Pole and Mecca clothing.

3.) Get a friend with an old electronic keyboard. Actually, scratch the friend part. I can do it myself.

4.) Pick out one of the 16 loaded beats. Choose a tempo.

5.) Put it on, and record myself mumbling over it. Subject matter must not exceed the range of "munny, secks, thugstaz, wummenzz". Oh yeah, gotta curse a lot too. My title track shall be me just endlessly bleating "DIPPETY DIPPETY DIPPETY D!!!!"

6.) When I write the words/lyrics, misspell everything horribly. Hmm. What's a good album title? I know! "Dippity D Duz Da Derrrty Deed".

7.) Shoot the album cover. Wear the aforementioned wigger clothing, scowl like an idiot, and show off my "blang" (fake).

8.) Release, sell the single to MTV, and become a millionaire overnight! It's that easy! AND it requires NO TALENT WHATSOEVER! Those of you clamoring for the "No" button below, wait 'til you hear my new single, "For Sheezy My Wheezy"! It'll soon be blasting at a local school dance near you!

No. Forget it. I'm not going to do any of that. If I make an album, it'll be of my OWN musical merit. I'll actually put some effort into it, and make something I can take pride in.

Avoid.

Show me the "Not Helpful" votes!"
---Eggplant

I completely agree with him 101% percent, and he knows what music is.
