I like watching it so much that I haven't even opened it up yet. Regardless, I'm already looking at ways to mod it or control it differently. I guess that's why the "educational value" is five stars.
It has five control modes: demo, remote, program, guard, and autonomous. Demo is pretty good for when someone asks what it is or does. You'll see it more than you ever intended. Remote control is OK cause you can see how it moves on different surfaces and stuff. Program mode lets you, basically, create your own demo. As with roboraptor, I use guard mode most. It's best for making people jump. A low awareness setting and placement near trafficked areas is efficient. High awareness is also nice because it seems to wake up every now and then. I wish I could make it scuttle away and then actively hide, but can't. It seems to wake from guard into either autonomous or runs a program. Programs can't send it to autonomous or guard. Oh well. Autonomous mode is for having it do stuff until the battery runs out. Mostly, I like to watch it play with a roomba. Having roboquad interact with roboraptor is OK for a while, but it isn't really more interesting than a bag of furbies. I wish they could fight. Really fight. Anyways, when autonomous or guarding, roboquad's "personality settings" help determine what it does. These settings are aggression, awareness, and activity. Awareness is basically sensor sensitivity. Activity seems to be the balance knob between scanning and moving. Aggression helps determine how it reacts when it notices stuff. I wish I could program in some reactions. Overall, I think roboquad is worth the money. I'll probably end up with a few, but don't know if I can use the remote on one without another listening in. I wish I could program it to enter guard or autonomous mode for a time period. Then it could play sentry by marching around, guarding, etc. I also wish it had a charging cradle like my old aibo.

This product is pretty down right cool. It is quality built. Top quality in my opinion. We are for sure moving forward in eventually having an intelligent robot. No, it's not the robot from the I ROBOT movie, but you sure can start to see the development of the basic systems at work. It truly would not take much to have this seem like a very real mechanical pet. Of course we are a few years from that, but the sparks are there. If you like robots and you like remote controlled devices and you are willing to spend the time to work with it, it is for you, for sure.

You won't be able to clean your floors, and you won't be able to have it serve you drinks, but the Roboquad will provide you with hours of fun. But not for long periods of time, and not spontaneously. Unfortunately, this guy has an on/off switch, and he doesn't go into any sort of rest power saving mode. And although you are able to program him, your instructions are lost when you turn him off. BUT, he is still fun to play with, and he is especially entertaining to the cats and dog. They just aren't sure what to make of the noisy creature that slowly "chases" him around the room. If you have some play money, and just want something fun to goof around with occasionally, then this is the toy. Have fun

excellent little "robot",
This review is from: WowWee Robotics Roboquad (Electronics)
My wife and kids bought me the red roboquad for my birthday this year. I think it's an incredibly entertaining toy. I'm 26 years old and I've been interested in robots for a long time, so maybe that skews my perspective a little, but I was incredibly eager to see what this thing could do.
I found it incredibly easy to navigate the basic controls. For more advanced features you'll need to give the control manual a once over, or just play with the remote for a while. I've played with the robosapien before and have to say I prefer this model hands down. It's movement is way better, it can move in almost any direction fairly instantaneously. It does have some forms of movement to help it get past large obstacles, but you need to control it yourself to activate them, it won't initiate those movements on its own. Some reviewers have complained about the autonomous modes, I found it incredibly enjoyable. We have several kittens, and at one point, the roboquad had locked onto one of the kittens and was following it around the living room. They really seemed to enjoy it. I was very impressed with its sensitivity to objects and obstacles, watching it scan its path and decide the best route is entertaining. of course it has other pre-programmed functions to make it wave, dance, roar, etc. but I do enjoy the autonomous exploration, and with the different levels of awareness, aggressiveness, etc. you can get some different results each time. As I said earlier the roboquad does have movements you can initiate to get over large obstacles, but it's not something it will do on its own. It might be nice if it lifted its legs higher, or had another point of articulation, but for the price, and other features it offers I was very impressed with what it could do. As the review started, I thoroughly enjoyed this gift and think it's an excellent little "robot" I'd call it a great birthday present.

cute toy that has video instructions,

My husband bought RoboQuad for himself (we don't have kids). It looked too cute and shiny in its box. Getting it out of the box was an adventure - it was secured with so many straps that it took him a while. I am not sure why it needs to be secured so much since it doesn't not come with the batteries.
We made a video on some of the functions of RoboQuad on HandBookLive.com (under Toys). The instructions that came with the toy were confusing. My husband never read them and just poked the remote control hoping for the best. Maybe kids catch on quicker, but we just used the Demo button a lot :) and simple navigation - Forward, Back, Left and Right. It kept my husband's interest for 2 days. You can watch the video on HandBookLive.com to see what the Robot does, and whether you would want to buy it or not. Hope this helps.

I got this robot for Chrismas after wanting it for two months. The packaging is surprisingly easy to get off--it only took my father and I about 10 minutes to take the inner box out, destroy all those twisty ties, and unscrew Roboquad from the stand. It's a lot of fun. The only two problems with it were that it was noisy--even on mute, its motors and legs made a lot of whirring, thumping, and squeaking on hardwood floors. The other problem is that you can't cut off a hallway with it in Guard Mode unless it has low awareness, because it keeps detecting the opposite wall and going crazy in high awareness modes. It walks fine on carpet. As an added bonus, Roboquad is fun to look at as well (that head is really cool) so it's appealing externally as well. I want a Wowwee Mini Roboreptile for it to interact with. I'll probably add more as I get more experience with it.

Much more fun than last years RoboReptile, the Roboquad dances and seems more pet-like. Plus there are a wide variety of ways to control it. I'll be posting more as I play with it.

We gave this robot to both an 11 yr old and a 13 year old. The 13 year old was better at 'researching' the directions for what the robot would do, but both have been happy with their 'new pet.'

Not so smart,
This review is from: WowWee Robotics Roboquad (Electronics)
I got this robot from my girlfriend for Christmas because she knows how much I love robots. I think this robot is a classic case of a great product that was poorly executed. It does NOT seem to react to it's environment. I've turned lights on and off around it, moved objects in front of it, made loud sounds near it, all with no reaction from it.
This guy couldn't find it's way around a room on it's own even if the room was empty! As I write this review, I'm watching it struggle to get out of a corner... DUH! The thing that bugs me most is all the technology exists to make this a much better product for the money. If you get this as a gift, it will most likely amuse you for a day at best. If you REALLY want a nice robot, be sure to look for the i-sobot by Tomy... THAT'S A REAL ROBOT!

I love Gadgets, but robotic toys have always been a letdown. They did not really live up to my expectations. I had a Robotic Dog that took so long getting through the startup process, the batteries were almost fully depleted by the time you really got to play with it. Quad is different...He is fun to watch, and examines everything! He does need a lot of room, but he is my favorate robot yet. you could even mount a wireless camera on his head and have him roam around the house recording!
The robot also does a pretty cool demo dance! When I bought him, it was about $80.00..a little high....now, I think the price is well worth it. I love seeing how each generation of robots gets better and better and Roboquad shows that the trend continues! |
