There must be an audience for the sort of barely-there soundscapes on this CD, considering how much music with a similar aesthetic is pumped out by ECM, but this CD trumps them all. It might have worked in the '60's, but now this sort of self-important, self-consciously "progressive" stuff sounds very dated. Very little happens on the 9 too-similar tracks on this CD, and what does happen unfolds slowly. S-L-O-W-L-Y. Lots of pittle pattle percussion and slow melodic fragments from the star instrument which sounds so wet from the recording environment that you can't really distiguish the sound quality of the Serpent. Not one single groove anywhere to be found. That's not a problem with music that offers other rewards, of course, as with music from Carter and Crumb to Coleman and Sun Ra, but here, at least a chance to tap a toe every now and then, even slowly, would've been welcome. If you like music that is the sonic equivalent of a few shards of beige broken pottery tossed on a stretched white sheet, this is for you. Otherwise, you may find yourself like me, begging for something, anything, to happen.
