Review

“Stamping is an accessible craft with a low barrier for entry—crafters only need a medium to carve, a linoleum cutter or craft knife, ink, and something on which to stamp . . . The variety of artists ensures a reasonably diverse range of styles . . . Stamping isn't just for scrapbookers, and this title will open crafters' eyes to the potential for stamping fabric, wood, and even porcelain.” —Library Journal

“Fabulous step-by-step photos and instructions for sophisticated designs.” —Bead Design Studio

This is an unusual pick for me. The author did not use beading or craft wire in this book, but this style of jewelry making is so hot right now. I thought that it was worth my taking a closer look. "Discover a jewelry-making technique that combines beading and fiber in sumptuous designs!" This style of jewelry making looks so much easier than I would have ever thought. I had an "I can totally do this too" moment as I thumbed through the book. With 30 projects, there are plenty of ideas. Maybe I need to make a sweet little pendant that I can hang from my beading wire!

From the back cover, "Anneta Valious shows how to create magnificent soutache jewelry full of graceful curves and beautiful bead embroidery."

This appears to be the first book on the topic of Soutache. The pictures are great, the instructions look great, and together, they make one want to run right out and start learning Soutache. For us beginners, the author provides "resources" sections. The alternative color-ways are good.

First, what is Soutache, exactly?

According to the author of this beautiful, engaging book, soutache was first developed in the 15th century in France. It was used as trim for clothing and also used to make jewelry. At the time, soutache was reserved for the aristocracy. It embellished many countries' military uniforms later on. Entirely hand embroidered, soutache continued in popularity with nobility, and with distinguished military corps until the Industrial Revolution democratized all sorts of things, including previously arduously hand embroidered adornments.

This reviewer was fascinated by the history of soutache. I have just paraphrased the author, but I cannot do justice to this venerable, glamorous technique.

For that the reader must view the photos in this stunning book!

The introduction explains the history. Then materials and tools are covered. Following this are the techniques required to create soutache bead embroidery.

The author, Anna Valious, was born in Russia but resides in France with her family. She is (unbelievably!) self taught. Her heritage from her mother and grandmother taught her sewing at an early age, but according to her bio page, it was not until she and her husband, living in France, bought a box of seed beads for their daughter that she began to become passionate about incorporating beads into her sewing projects. Eventually she taught herself how to make the most amazing, original jewelry, incorporating soutache and gems, and soutache and crystals, utilizing extraordinary color combinations.

The ultimate result can be enjoyed when viewing the incredible projects available in this treasure of a book.

There are three sections after the Techniques section.

Even if you are new to Soutache Embroidery, this book is all you need to get started. It has beautiful projects, and very clear instructions and photos. It is a wonderful book. I love it !! Although it doesn't tell where to buy the soutache ribbon, I found many places on line, such as Ebay, Etsy, and I also found a limited supply of it at Hobby Lobby in the ribbon and fabric section. It does not call it soutache ribbon. It is decorative trim, 1/8 inch. They have brown, black, red, white, gray, and some two-tone colors.

Soutache- 30 Gorgeous Bead Embroidery Designs by Anneta Valious is a collection of wonderful instructions for all sorts of jewelry items made using soutache and beads.

Soutache is a decorative narrow flat braid that has a groove the center. It is generally stitched to a fabric background along that groove. It's been used for a very long time as a decoration on clothing and the book starts with the history of soutache embroidery on clothing.

Soutache bead embroidery is done differently than soutache decorations on fabric though. Instead of being sewn to a fabric backing, the braid is sewn to itself with beads and cabochons incorporated in the sewing. The effect is lush and lends itself well to curves and scroll like shapes.

The introduction covers tools, materials and techniques. You'll learn how to identify good quality soutache, what kind of thread and needles to use and how to start and finish pieces neatly so you don't have fraying ends showing.

Then the projects which do a wonderful job of showing the versatility of this fantastic beading technique. There are bracelets, necklaces, rings, earrings and even a couple of hair accessories.

The projects are separated by technique. The first section is simple designs which use beads and buttons. While the author calls the projects simple, the end effect is stylish. The curves and layers of colors create stunning visual interest. My favorite project in this section is the Atlantis pendant. It's ornate curves, sparkling beads and clever clasp make it a dressy, artistic winner.

The next section of projects focuses on things with cabochons and has more intricate beadwork. This set includes the cover projects, the Capriccio necklace and earrings set.
