Originally written when the author was a scholar at the Brookings Institution, this book is useful as a history of South Africa's internal and external security problems up until the early 1980s. It was written as a primer during the debates within the United States over the policies of engagement versus opposition to the South African government and, as a result, reflects those arguments. For example, it spends a good deal of time addressing the question of whether South Africa or its enemies the African Frontline States were primarily responsible for instability in the region.
