Engaging prog-house-trance with disc two the big winner,
This review is from: South America (Audio CD)
It?s blindingly obvious by now that there are just too many DJs out there, and entirely too many mixes to wade through. And yet so many of these high profile spinners, proudly touting ten thousand-plus record collections, still stick us with a staggering amount of filler drum tracks and incidental pieces notable only for blending seamlessly into the next. Is it too much to expect a dozen engaging cuts these days? At least Paul Oakenfold?s Perfecto-picked buddy Hernan Cattaneo chooses songs which refuse to noodle off into the background. Careening through proper progressive house doozies ?After 2? and ?Storyreel,? full-on emotive anthems with tough backing, to novelty hooker ode ?You Are Sleeping,? and sizzling acid house ?The Search,? he?s selected (gasp) actual records to play, even if duff vocal ?No More Ghosts,? and so-5-years-ago-vogue NASA recording ?The Way? are dragged along in the process. Thankfully disc two earns your cash, leading with the rapturous tones of Shmuel Flash 5-star ?Chilling Moments? an accordion and chimes-filled operatic vision that harks back to the blissful trance of days gone by. Hot on those heels, the conga-percussion ?Lights Out,? warm electro ?Western Nights? and spellbinding trifecta of ?Walking on Fire,? massively dubbed out ?Headstrong? and epic closer ?Numb? reworked by Bedrock production engineer Nick Muir send this set into stereo rewind. I picked this disc up some time ago on a whim after seeing him open up for Paul Oakenfold. The music he spins is incredible and so smooth live!! This mix really is spectacular from beginning to end. It shows how talented he truly is by combining sexy deep house with groovy trance magic. The result is pure listening bliss. "No more ghosts" is a haunting opener and brings things on rather well. About half way through we are aroused from the deep grooves by the song "You are Sleeping" a chilling reminder of the harsh realities of life. Cattaneo then takes us deeper into progressive bliss. Disc 2 has a different feel to it but has the same effect: blazing, sweet tunes that get me up and wanting to dance! If you like progressive house Hernan is the man. Cheers!!

I too bought this on a whim because it was a Perfecto. Perfecto it is!You know how they say you should cook a lobster over a low flame and gradually raise the temperature? Cattaneo sets out to cook you the same way. Deep, dark, steamy, smooth and sexy, the rhythms of this double set are delightfully hypnotic. While the second of the two discs is where the main action is, the first disc sets you up nice and slow, and you get really cooking on the second. It's a good set-up and a great buy. I believe that Deep Dish's, "Moscow," is a great companion album to this one.
