This review is from: South American Handbook 2010: 86th annual edition of the 'bible' for travel in South America (Footprint South American Handbook) (Hardcover)
Living Dreams 1 Van, 3 Years, 2 Parents, 6 Kids, 15 Countries and Becoming a Functional Family I highly recommend the South American Handbook to anyone traveling several South American countries. My husband and I spent 3 years driving and touring most of the countries on the continent in our van with our 6 children and it was an absolutely indispensable tool. We kept referring to this travel book above others we had along and eventually shipped the others home when downsizing; SAH was all we needed. Information provided on accommodation ranges from the tight budget traveler to 5 star hotels. We didn't have a complaint about any of the eating-places we found through SAH. Places of interest information, including many remote areas, is extremely accurate. We used the 1997 edition and I just purchased the 2010 edition, as my daughter is about to embark on a 6-month tour. The South American Handbook is updated yearly. Although the 2010 edition is packed with all the same great updated info, the format has changed from the 2-column format of earlier editions and a little harder to follow.

I attempted to use this guide for Chile, Argentina, Columbia, Ecuador, and Peru. I learned quickly that this just gave me a superficial overview of the cities. Hostel owners kept laughing and asking me when didn't I just buy the lonely planet series. This book tries to accomplish too much which results in accomplishing nothing that you can't find on tripadvisor.com. Don't waste your money, buy a book for each country.

I have just completed a 2 month trip to Central America and relied on the Central American Handbook. It is the single best source of accurate information about CA. The South American Handbook is similar and it will be the only book that I will carry in my very minimalist twenty pound
backpack for my next two month trip to parts of SA.

This 1800 page book has been printed in tiny tiny font to keep it "small". If you don't have 20-year-old eyes, you need a magnifying glass to read the print.
I am horribly disappointed that I bought it and had it shipped to me at anchor in Colombia at great cost. This is one example when an online book purchase failed -- I would NEVER have bought the book if I had seen in in person.

Very extensive but also sometimes very unregular approach in different countries. Anyway helpful, trustful and good value.
