South Beach Soynuts - Great Tasting Snack, April 28, 2008
These chocolate covered soy nuts are a great snack, especially for those who like dark chocolate. If you can be satisfied by the 100 calorie portions, they can definitely help you satisfy your cravings and stay healthy too.
Some have noted the sweeteners in the product and the fat content to mean that this snack is not healthy. Not true. All packaged goods have sweeteners and preservatives, and the fat with soy nuts is mostly the "good fat" that doctors recommed. The small size of the 100 calorie packs are perfect for those looking for portion control. As long as you have the discipline to only have one pack of these, they can be a healthy snack. Once again, nuts tend to be filling so I was surprised to find that even with these small packs it felt like one was enough for me.
The only real critique I can make is regarding the small number of packs in each box. Because the portions are so small, they could have definitely made larger versions with twice as many packs.
If you have a soy allergy or are already eating lots of soy in other forms (soy milk, tofu, etc) then you may want to avoid this. For everybody else, this is a great snack that you should try.

Finally, the US food industry has discovered the holy grail of snack marketing! Instead of killing their customers with lethal amount of fat and sugar and calories in their traditional bulk-size packaging, now the industry has learned something that should been completely obvious but somehow overlooked: put the same stuff into smaller packages (100 calories seem to be the magic number), market them as dietary supplements, and charge folks more money for it. Don't get me wrong, I think it is a good idea -albeit not the most economical option for consumers-but at least people can snack more sensibly without killing themselves. This South Beach choco-covered soynuts is another welcoming addition to the line up of the 100-calorie snack options. They taste just like what you would expect soynuts covered with chocolate would taste. The nuts are crispy, neutral in taste, and reminiscent pinenuts. Soynuts, the same beans in edamame, are not salty or sweet naturally, which complements the intensity of the chocolate very well. However, if you don't like soynuts, perhaps you should get something else. Nutritionally, these snack packs are comparable to most others out there - average fat content (6G) and carb (9G). I expected more protein, considering the chocolate and the soynuts and all, but surprisingly there are only 3 grams of protein, so not something suitable for pre-workout snacking.

Whether you like soy nuts or not, you can't taste the soy nuts with the chocolate taking over the taste. The soy nuts' job is to provide a little crunch and balance. Sometimes, I'm reminded of chocolate covered espresso beans and I like those -- at least here, you get a healthier soy nut instead of a caffeinated bean.
Don't expect the individual chocolate-covered soy nut to be as large as M&M's with peanuts. The chocolate-covered soy nuts are larger than mini-M&Ms and resemble the size of a regular M&M except they're oval instead of round.
One person commented these use semi-sweet chocolate rather than dark chocolate. I recognize both types and this does taste similar to Nestle's semi-sweet chocolate chips. It also tastes like chocolate-covered espresso bean chocolate -- which uses dark.
Each pack contains roughly 20-25 soy nuts. Once in a while, you'll get a double. Since each bag contains 100 calories, it contains more than what you get with some of the other 100 calories snacks.
I ate them when I felt like having a little sweet that wasn't too sweet. So I wasn't starving and feeling like I could eat anything. After a nice meal, I grabbed these and enjoyed them. I plan to buy another box whenever I see a sale as I don't buy packaged snacks at regular price.
