About the Author

Caroline Whitmire Todd and Sidney Smith Wait grew up in South Carolina-Ms. Todd in Columbia and Ms. Wait in Beaufort. As sorority sisters at the University of South Carolina, they became friends; but after school, they married and went their separate ways. In 1988, both having returned to Columbia, they renewed their friendship and decided to write a book. Caroline Todd is mother of six and grandmother of six. She and her family have lived in a number of U. S. states-and in Japan-but her heart has remained true to South Carolina. In her job with the South Carolina Protection and Advocacy System, Ms. Todd spends a lot of time traveling around the Midlands. She confesses to using interstate highways to travel to meetings, but she always tries to come home by the back roads. Growing up on the sea islands of Beaufort County, Sidney Wait gained an early appreciation for the fascinating people and geographic grandeur of South Carolina. She has enjoyed a successful professional career that has included painting, sculpture, teaching, and the providing of services to special needs children. Ms. Wait raised three children of her own and assisted in the rearing of more than twenty foster children. She has visited many other countries and traveled extensively throughout the United States-always choosing the "longway" and the lesser traveled roads. Each return home to South Carolina has been accompanied by a renewed respect for her home state's diversity, history, and beauty.

This book is fantastic! I live in Columbia and can tour any county and return home in the same day. This book reveals all kinds of wonderful, historical sites which are not only interesting to me, but also to my children. We even found new places to visit in our own county!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Key to Having Fun, March 23, 2001

Caroline and Sidney have done a real piece of research in preparing this wonderful book. I know many of the places mentioned and can vouch for their accuracy. They seem to have a real feel for old South Carolina architecture. With this book you can go anywhere in South Carolina and have an interesting day or two by just using it as your guide. What a wonderful gift for a friend that's visiting from out of state.

4.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and attractive, November 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: South Carolina, a Day at a Time (Paperback)
Todd and Wait provide a competent, comprehensive, and attractive guide to each of the state's 46 counties. They cover the historical sights of each county in a systematic fashion, with knowledgeable commentary on architecture. Their photographs, all in color, are very good. The greatest shortcoming is the county maps, which are passable, but difficult to use without the supplementary aid of a detailed, county road guidebook. The description of natural sights, as opposed to buildings, is a little lacking.
