4.0 out of 5 stars Good information, but page format weak., June 24, 2008

(REAL NAME)
This field guide has excellent information, stating not only the range of each species in Southeast Asia, but outside that region as well. This is one of the book's strong points. There are also lines pointing to good field marks in the species illustrated. However, not all the species are pictured, although all are described in the text. More than 850 of the 1,198 species described are illustrated. Most of the plates are in color, but some are black and white.

Another major strength of the book is the bibliography, probably the best I've seen in any field guide of birds. Useful books on Southeast Asia birds are marked with an asterisk. This is very helpful for one who wishes to know what books to consult.

However, a weakness of this otherwise excellent book is that the illustration plates are scattered throughout the text. It would be much easier if the plates were all grouped together, and then the text section following.

So I must say that Robson's "Birds of Southeast Asia" would be much easier to use in the field. Nevertheless, the field guide reviewed here has some great points, and would serve as a good reference for any really interested in birds of Southeast Asia.
