In the forefront,
By Gary Gauger (Minnetonka, MN, US) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The South of Everywhere (Audio CD)
I've heard a lot of guitarist in the many years that I'v both listened and played jazz. Kreisberg really grabs you from several directions. His technique is awsome yet it's not the 'whole' of his style that impresses me. It's his wonderful ideas that are not dependent on his technique but only used when he has an idea that requires it. Many of the great jazz players of guitar are defined by their incredible ability around the instrument. Kreisberg never lets that happen but after you listen to a few of his solos you realize the amazing technique he has, he just never lets it get in the way of the music. It reminds me of a great painter like Picasso. Amazing technique as a painter but you could tell a Picasso even if it were a only a few simple lines.
The first CD I heard from Kriesberg was Nine Stories Wide with Bill Stewart and Larry Grenadier. One of my favorites. This was a great CD since it showed the talents of three of the best musicians in jazz today. Each menber had equal time, it never sounded like they were 'backing up' the lead player. The South of Everywhere is probably the best one (I think) since that trio CD. The solos are wonderful, especially Will Vinson the alto player and Mark Ferber the drummer.A very cohesive group with good writing and excellent playing by all. Kreisberg is one of the few players that I would buy any of his CDs immediately as soon as ther're available since you know it's all about the music with a lot of innovation and originality. I highly recommend it and tell all the jazz musicians I know to check it out.

I did a search for jazz guitarists and found Jonathan Kreisberg. I chose Nine Stories Wide because of Bill Stewart and Larry Grenadier. From that point on I have been a huge fan and have purchased all his CDs. He plays so musically, never any chaff. I agree completely with Gary Gauger(Hi Gary). By this or any of his CDs and be in for a musical treat. One BMF.

Wow, this one was worth every cent. Just beautiful and origingal musicianship that must be heard and absorbed. Kreisberg has a voice on his instrument that make me feel like I know him personally. Every track is great and it just doesn't slow down. The last three tracks for example consist of "Elena" a georgeous ballad, "Altered Ego" great trading solos between guitar and sax, and "The Best Thing for You" a rarely heard Irving Berlin standard.
