It's always a more rewarding experience to see photographs in person rather than in books. But I must say this smallish volume captures the essence of Delaney's images as they appear in person. The color rendition is very true to her archival pigment prints, and the book's layout is clean (e.g., plenty of white space that mirrors the series' exhibition style). The text that's included enhances readers' understanding of the context and motivations for the photographs. Delaney's images are full color - though some give the impression of selective coloration and toning.

There's a narrative, documentary or photojournalistic feel to the images. But the artistry is at a level beyond all but the very best of photojournalists. If you can see the exhibition, do so. Then get this book as a reminder of how urban areas can change (that holds for suburban ones too...). If you cannot see the show then definitely get this book as a surrogate! Especially if you are from SF, have an interest in SF or are in an urban area that is in the throes of gentrification.

We are so luck that Janet Delaney had the foresight to see the interest people would have in a great, old, funky neighborhood that has essentially disappeared.
