Sounds of the Islands,
By "sfea3" (Sunnyvale, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: South Pacific Drums (Audio CD)
In the days of old, every social, political and cultural event in an islander's life was accompanied by the beating of drums. In this compilation , the importance of the drum in the cultural life of pacifica is transmitted by the drums' varying beats and rhythms. "Maha" and "Pae" reminds the listener (Pacific Islander or not) of what has been lost, but most importantly of what has been preserved.I recommend South Pacific Drums to all Pacific Islanders who wish to re-connect and perpetuate their culture as well as to those interested in the rich culture of pacifica.

This cd is loaded with great Polynesian drum rhythms - excellent for dancing or as background music for a luau. These are authentic melodies not orchestrated versions so they may seem "raw" if you are used to the "Lawrence Welk style" of Hawaiian/Polynesian music. However, if you are looking for REAL Polynesian drumming then this is the cd for you.

Perfect for Tahitian dancers too!,
By Love and Aloha "Sejika" (Honolulu, Hawaii) - See all my reviews
This review is from: South Pacific Drums (Audio CD)
Not only is this album great to listen to... it is also helpful to beginning Ari Tahiti students who need to hone their faarapu and tairi skills. Because the drummers can't follow you home and play while you practice in front of your bathroom mirror, this album provides basic beats that every Tahitian dancer should be able to follow.
