Volume 5 of South Park on home video pairs two thematic, daring episodes that are among the louder commentary of creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. "Starvin' Marvin" (1997's Thanksgiving episode) touches on the opposing ideas of starvation and eating in an attack on townspeople by genetically altered turkeys while the boys adopt an Ethiopian boy accidentally sent to them via airmail (they really wanted the complimentary sports watch). An acidic portrayal of Sally Struthers spices this episode, and though the idea of "Marvin" is at first difficult to swallow, the searing hilarity provokes thought. Pointed and very funny.

"Mecha Streisand" was a chance for Parker and Stone to unleash their hatred of Barbra Streisand (as they capriciously state in their filmed introduction). Paying tribute to the Japanese monster-duel movies of the 1960s like Godzilla, the story hilariously portrays Streisand as a rich, egomaniacal celebrity (wonder why) hell-bent on finding the missing relic that will transform her into a giant metal Barbra--a monster who crushes South Park's buildings at one moment while pausing to sign an autograph for Kyle's mother the next. Another highlight of "Mecha-Streisand" is the portrayal of a cynical, laid-back Leonard Maltin who, teamed with Sydney Poitier and Robert Smith of the Cure, band together to battle the evil "Mecha-Streisand." Don't miss "Mecha-Streisand." (For adults only.) --Karen Karleski

5.0 out of 5 stars Another funny one from Matt and Trey!, November 9, 1999
This review is from: South Park, Vol. 05: Starvin' Marvin/Mecha-Streisand [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Two very ammusing episodes. Starvin' Marvin was a very humorous look at other countries(from the south park scene of course) also the satire of Sally Struthers was hilarious. The next episode with Barbra Striesand was pure gold. I will never look at her the same way! 5 stars!

4.0 out of 5 stars Mecha Striesand -- a Tribute to Toho, September 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: South Park, Vol. 05: Starvin' Marvin/Mecha-Streisand [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Of the two episodes on this tape, I recommend "Mecha-Striesand", which uses every Kaiju movie schtick from Toho's and Daiei's productions of the '50s and '60s. You know you are in for some demented Daikaiju action when the Mothra fairies show up about halfway through. (And if not, I'll Rochambeau you for it...)

5.0 out of 5 stars South Park battles Turkey's and Babs all on one video!!!, April 9, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: South Park, Vol. 05: Starvin' Marvin/Mecha-Streisand [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Terribly controversial issues to deal with in the "Starvin Marvin" episode, but (remember) there is a moral to every story. Cartman is hauled off to 'Ethernopia' when he is mistaken as the sorrowfully skinny Marvin, whom the boys have adopted in order to aqquire a sports watch. (SWEEEET) In South Park, Chef and Mufesto( the crazed Marlon Brando-esque magician on the hill) battle genetically engineered Turkey's to save Thanksgiving. I really liked this episode, especially with the "Braveheart" battle scene and Kenny in the Grab-A-Can raffle. In "Mecha-Streisand," the boys find the Diamond of ?Koolache? and have a Godzilla inspired battle with Sidney Portier and that guy from The Cure, along with Leonard Maltin. Baby Ike is sooo cute in this episode, by far he is my fave character! I also enjoyed whomever impersonated Barbara, and the little Aisan guy who sang the song. The parapalegic Swiss Man on- a- pony was totally funny, I must of laughed for 10 minutes straight! Cartman has some good parts in the episode, like when he breaks in to Kyle's room to steal "back" the Diamond. Very good retorts from the other guys and a good death by Kenny ( watch and you'll see what I mean) UPROARIOUS! Five Stars!!!!
