5.0 out of 5 stars Sick but very very funny, October 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: South Park, Vol. 11: Chef's Salty Chocolate Balls/Chickenpox [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The chickenpox episode is, in a word, a gross-out but one cannot help laughing, notwithstanding. And the "Chef's Salty Balls" episode, where the Sundance Festival comes to South Park, is hilarious, and a goldmine of South Park references to other films or programs: when the Film Commissioner speaks about spreading from "quaint little mountain town to quaint little mountain town, like termites" the music from Independence Day is playing. When they build a "Hollywood Planet" restaurant, the under-construction globe looks exactly like the unfinished Death Star in The Return of the Jedi. Mr Hanky plays the pipe organ in the sewers like the Phantom of the Opera. When he conjures up the exploding sewers, it's a delicious parody of Disney's The Sorceror's Apprentice. When Mr Hanky "dies", first he croaks, "There is...another...Skywalker..." -- then they put him in a sanitized ICU like ET when HE "died". "Tom Hanks" in the festival film "Me and Mr Hankey" speaks lines from "Philadelphia". And the send-ups of artificial Hollywood types are delightful as well. And of course, there's Chef's confectionaries...! One of the delights of repeat viewings is spotting the arch references to other works. Not for the prudish, or squeamish for that matter, but a hoot anyway!
