Book Description

April 1, 2007
A satirical play on the bestselling book The World Is Flat by Thomas Friedman, this book takes a humorous approach to social issues facing the conflicted, contemporary south. Tackling everything from crystal meth abuse and obesity to sexual misconduct, it blends sarcasm with outspoken insight that will make readers laugh in spite of it all. This unrestrained, humorous take on life in the 21st-century south will delight both native southerners and those who simply love the land below the Mason-Dixon Line.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Meant to be a satirical Southern response to Thomas Friedman's bestselling globalism primer The World is Flat, Magee's book skips economics, international business-and intelligent satire-to focus instead on the laziest kind of shock humor. Casual racism and misogyny abound, whether Magee's recalling drunken sex on a golf course or advising African-American politicians to win votes by "exposing their blackness to the highest degree": "get a hat and put it on crooked.... get some big gaudy chains ... grab your crotch and slump your shoulders." Commentary on illegal immigration hits similar notes: "It does seem at times that illegal immigrants are living as if on extended work vacation where nothing needs to be taken too seriously." Though his publisher touts Magee as "edgy," readers may find more appropriate descriptors in "juvenile" and "irrelevant"; perhaps a thesis or a conclusion would have given Magee's "humor" more bite. For Southern humor completists only.

From Booklist

Newspaper columnist Magee offers up a good-natured riposte to The World Is Flat, in which Thomas Friedman asserted that revolutions in communications technology and the global economy have brought us all closer together, in effect flattening the globe. But the South, Magee says, is a world unto itself, and it's as round as ever, full of color and contradiction and idiosyncrasy. The book tackles a number of themes, including what it means to be a redneck, the importance of a deep fryer, the South's indigenous food and drink, the new economy ("poor ass white trash beggars"), and the ever-expanding waistlines of the southern population. Magee has a few surprises up his sleeve: Did you know that the most prolific buyers of Halloween-related paraphernalia in the U.S. live in the Bible Belt? There's a lot of Dave Barry here, but unlike the mainstream comedy Barry dispenses, Magee's stuff is more firmly rooted in its unique landscape, and he is often as enlightening as he is funny. 5.0 out of 5 stars Good southern humor, no fluff here!, June 22, 2007

David Magee has done an excellent job of compiling a book of what I would deem contemporary Southern humor. This book is a great read, I thoroughly enjoyed it, even though I tend to be somewhat critical of most Southern humor offerings as being somewhat less than genuine. In this case, it's genuine, real, and highly, highly entertaining - I recommend this book heartily!

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Observation About Southern Culture Current and Past, July 6, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The South Is Round: Contemplations of a 21st Century Redneck (Hardcover)
Having married a southern woman, I was indoctrinated into the southern culture many years ago. It was a totally different culture than that of the New England of my birth, and it had a charm that I was no accustomed to. However, in the past 20 years, with the rise of Atlanta as a major power center, the South has slowly changed.

While I didn't find this book funny, I did find it humorous. The author wrote a series of chapters that could very well be stand alone essays on the old South versus the New South and how things are changing. Less of a humorist and more of an observer, Magee has captured the feeling of the way things are now and how the older generations feel about it.

A very good read for those who are familiar with the South, and a great read for those who want to know how the South has changed.
