The beds are a little shorter than we expected - the dimensions in the bed description are accurate, we just didn't pay attention. Actually the low height is good for us since we bought these for preschoolers.

The drawer handles stick out and have caused a few scratches/bruises so we might replace them with something rounder. These beds might not last into high school, but we should at least make it through elementary school.

We would definitely choose them again.

This is a super cheap bed. It was delivered for free via super saver shipping. So I don't know why I was surprised by the problems I had.

Problem #1) Odds are, this bed will arrive damaged. Its a heavy chunk of several particle boards and awkward to carry. Hardly surprising then, that the first one I ordered was damaged en route. Fortunately, the damage was spotted before it was delivered, so it never made it to my house. If it had been delivered (like it was to some others whose reviews I read), I'm not exactly sure how I would have repackaged it, had it picked up and returned. Its too heavy for one person to lift and maneuver - and I guess that includes the delivery people. I ordered the bed again, and this time it arrived without any noticeable damage. 50% ain't bad!

Problem #2) Shoddy construction & annoying assembly quirks. The little handles/pulls on the drawers are sharp and have scraped my feet several times in the week I've used it. Lots of the holes and contact points for the various pieces don't line up, so you have to force them into place. While I have problems with Ikea, they spend more time making their products easy to assemble at home. Several screws on this bed required a "robertson" (square head) screw driver. I have many tools, but not one of these. What's wrong with a phillps or flathead? Dumb. Also, the directions read backwards, from the bottom of each page to the top. Really?
So it took me 3 hours to assemble this bed, without Problem #3)...

Problem #3) Missing parts. There were several missing screws, dowels, and whatnot. This would seem to be a small issue, but the bed can't be assembled without them. I had to make a separate trip to the hardware store and then file down some wooden dowels so they would fit the holes. This took an extra two hours on a separate night.

Conclusion: If I had to do it over again, I would have gotten the Nomad bed frame on Amazon, which my friend bought. Nomad Solid Hardwood Platform Bed Frame - Twin Size While it looks plain compared to the glamour shots that this South Shore bed has,it is much easier to assemble, more sturdy and has no real design flaws.

4.0 out of 5 stars Overall a good bed, September 2, 2009

I bought this bed for my 3-year-old son, as his first "big boy bed". I was able to put it together myself without difficulty. It's a good sturdy construction (for what it's made of. This is not solid wood we're talking about here), and the finish looks great. I only have two qualms about this bed, and they're minor. First, the bed is, all around, just a smidgen bigger than a standard twin mattress, so you have to think about that when deciding what linens to choose. Second, the drawers are not on rollers. It's just a plastic slider piece mounted into a slot in the wood, so it has the tendency to stick a little, particularly in humid weather. However, I have found that a little olive oil does help this problem somewhat. I would still recommend this bed for anyone looking for a good, sturdy, inexpensive child's bed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great bed for a "mild child" or small adult., March 23, 2010

I ordered two of these beds for my sons (ages 4 & 15) and I am happy with them. They were very easy to put together. The color is very dark--almost black which works great for the decor in my boys room. You actually don't even see much of the bed at all if you don't tuck in the comforter. The beds look nice, but I'm wondering how they will stand the test of time...FYI: the quality is OK, and pretty much consistent with any less-expensive, put-it-together-yourself furniture, but the drawer bottoms are on the flimsy side. They are fine for clothes, but I wouldn't put anything too heavy in them (lots of books, etc.). The dowels are made of plastic, not wood, and so are the drawer guides. Also, the boards that the mattress sits on top of are questionable...They seem a bit flimsy as well. I think they will be just fine for sleeping on, but if you have a child who likes to jump on beds, or tends to be on the destructive side, I'm not sure I would recommend this product. I also wouldn't recommend this product for an adult who is very large because I'm not sure the bed would hold up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great bed, August 20, 2011

I bought this bed because when I was researching box spring mattresses, but was getting so discouraged because the cheapest one I could find had a $200 delivery fee.

I hopped on Amazon and started searching for a basic little platform bed. I liked this one because it was under $150, and had drawers. I then purchased a 7" memory foam mattress from Overstock. It fits so perfectly!

Bed came in a box that had a few rips, but the bed itself seemed okay. My husband was dubious as he pulled the pieces out and checked them, because some of the particle board had cracks in it. But, a little wood glue and some clamps, and I guess it worked out, because he put it all together himself one Saturday morning (yay daddy!) I set it up with some cute bedding, and presto, our little girl transitioned from a toddler bed to a big girl bed.

I moved her clothes to the drawers just in time for the new baby who took over the dresser, and she is a very happy little girl. If this lasts, it will be classy enough to make it through to high school. I may buy another one and store it in the garage for my newborn!

Height is good for children, it's fairly low profile; it would also make a great guest bed because you can make it like a daybed during the day and keep all the extra bedding in the drawers.

Drawer warning: we will need to change out the knobs, they have ripped my legs open because they are super sharp. Need something rounded. Also, for safety don't overstuff the drawers (like we did) even though they can take it, because they will not close and walking around them is crazy due to the knob issue as well as the sharp corners (or stock up on bandaids.) I just can't see them against dark carpet, and every time I make the bed I get gashes.

Overall: bed is a great little bed and is DEFINITELY worth it for the free shipping!!

I recently bought this bed for my 2-year-old son. It was easy to put together by myself and it is sturdy and well made for an inexpensive bed. The only downside I have found is the drawers aren't on rollers and are hard to pull in and out. I bought this bed to be able to keep my son's toys in the drawers and he is able to pull them out just enough to get his toys out but he can't pull them all the way out so I can't put any bigger toys in there. He also can't push them closed because they stick, which means he's fallen over the drawers trying to get out of bed sometimes. I'm going to try another reviewer's suggestion of putting olive oil on them to see if that will help. If it weren't for the drawers sticking I would have given this bed 5 stars.
