I decided to go with the "budget" model of a lateral file.

Big mistake.

Thus far, the lateral file does, in fact, appear to hold files.

Unfortunately, accessing files is difficult. The drawer needs to slide out an additional inch. Each time a file is inserted, it scratches the wood on top, due to the fact the drawer does not slide out far enough. (Note: only the top drawer locks.) In addition, the drawer barely has clearance for the base of the files (i.e. do not plan on having deep files). Also, the drawer barely has clearance for the tabs on the top of the files.

Construction and materials are sub-Ikea quality. The lateral file is made out of particle board. The instructions contain many errors (mostly referencing part numbers that don't match the list of parts, but also some instructions that don't match the picture). The worst part of the instructions was the part about installing the rails for the drawers, "Holes not pre-drilled." Some of the screws provided were flat instead of pointed, which made them more difficult to get into some of the holes.

The bottom of the drawers is a piece of cork-board. Do not plan on putting anything in this filing cabinet that isn't actually a file (i.e. using the drawers for stacking things will result in broken drawer bottoms.

To construct this item, you will need a hammer, flathead screwdriver, and philips screwdriver.

I transfered two cubic-foot boxes of legal-sized files into the top drawer. They fit comfortably, with no additional room.

I would not buy this product again.

THE PRODUCT IS GOOD - NICELY CONSTRUCTED, EASY TO ASSEMBLE, LOOKS NICE. ONLY ISSUE I HAD WAS WHEN I RECEIVED IT, THE FRONT TOP PANEL WAS DAMAGED. I CONTACTED THE COMPANY IMMEDIATELY AND HAD THE REPLACEMENT PANEL WITHIN A WEEK. SO, ALTHOUGH IT WAS DAMAGED, THEY REPLACED IT QUICKLY AND IT LOOKS GOOD.

My only complaint is that it can be difficult to fit new hanging folders in there, especially when it is no longer mostly empty. If the drawer rolled out just an inch further it would be perfect.

Sturdy, easy to assemble and fine looking. One drawback is the easy loss of some of the veneer on the corners...
I'm happy with it.
