5.0 out of 5 stars Rugged, Wild, and Private, July 21, 2009

I first visited the South Sierra Wilderness in 1992 when my friend Martin and I went on a 225 mile hike to celebrate his graduation. Sans map, we simply followed the Pacific Crest Trail through the wilderness and ultimately into Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. I have returned many times to this rugged land. South of the High Sierra and dry (Pinyon pines are the most common tree here) it is still very beautiful and schools of Golden trout are so thick in the South Fork of the Kern River through Monache Meadow that you can watch whole schools move by following unusual wave patterns on the surface. Except for PCT through hikers and visitors to Kennedy Meadows, the whole area is rarely visited and hardly even noted in most guidebooks.

This new (2008) map by Tom Harrison may change that. It shows all the access trails, old jeep roads, ranger stations, and elevation profiles (contour interval, 80 feet) in great detail. Like other recent Harrison publications, this one is GPS compatible and includes the complete UTM grid. Coupled with his map of the adjoining Golden Trout Wilderness, you could spend the whole summer exploring the southern Sierra and hardly see a soul. I doubt this map will sell as well as other Harrison maps for more popular areas, but if you want to explore the wild southern portion of California's best mountain range, this is a good place to start.
