5.0 out of 5 stars after leaving home i can now cook like my momma did
Ms Garza didn't experiment-she is right on track with this authentic book full of flavors known widely to the latin/hispanics. Some recipes might require additional seasoning/flavoring (ie cumin, salt, etc)but don't deviate too much. Her spanish rice is the closest thing to mommas. highly recommended and i have the first printing when it was $8.95.

2.0 out of 5 stars Experts Only
My family grew up in South Texas, and it's a good thing or the cookbook would not be very helpful. The recipes are what you would expect from South Texas, however the details needed to prepare these authentic recipes are simply not to be found in this cookbook. I also have the Tex-Mex Cookbook, and the San Antonio Tex Mex Cookbook, and both offer well written recipes...

Ms. Garza, I want to personally thank you for putting a book together that has all my childhood food recipes together. The food is exactly how I remember my mom's cooking. I have also purchased this book as gifts, so my friends can also pass this wonderful traditional food on to their families and friends. Many Thanks

This book was gift when my family was transferred from Houston, Tx to New York State. Enables us to still have good down home mexican dishes that just don't exist north of the mason dixon line.

My mother finding this book in her school library and purchasing one for herself was one of the best surprises ever, because she gave me that book. My grandmother and mother were fabulous cooks and being from the San Diego/Kingsville, Tx area cooked like many of the women around there did. I unfortunately, didn't have that cooking skill and was to busy with life to learn the old ways. This book brings back some great memories. The food tastes just like how grandma used to make it, from the pan de campo to the fideo. Now, I can cook the way they did and even in my late 30's, I can be a fabulous cook too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent both from a cooking and cultural standpoint, May 24, 1999
This review is from: South Texas Mexican Cookbook (Hardcover)
The riddles and Versitos Para Ninos are a delightful touch that adds to the great down home recipes. It offers the reader a trip down memory lane for those famaliar with Spanish and Mexican everyday life and a peak at another culture for those who are not. It is a great gift as well as one to own yourself. Enjoy!

South Texas Mexican Cookbook

This is the only authentic Mexican cookbook that I recommend to friends or relatives who were not taught to cook; or were not allowed in the kitchen. I have had this book for the last 15 or 20 years. I also gifted one to each of my three sons, to cousins, and also to friends. Lucy was a personal friend of my sister, Alma Daisy Cox Ornelas. She also has produced a GREAT COOKBOOK! I am so glad and fortunate that it is still in print. Just one question; why did you change the cover? The original one better illustrated the end product of our efforts.

Thank you Lucy and the rest of your family.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just like home...(Thanks Jared), December 7, 2008
This review is from: South Texas Mexican Cookbook (Hardcover)
This book reminds me so much of my grandmother's cooking. It's almost like I'm back in San Antonio, this is the closest thing I can get to real Tex-mex food here in Illinois. This is the best gift ever! I can't thank you enough Jared, you're the best friend ever!
