The poets Hart Crane and Wallace Stevens appear as characters in the title novella of Michael Brodsky's latest collection of short stories, Southernmost, though it's difficult to identify them or anyone else in this literary alphabet soup. X knows T and I is avoiding Z because his/her anxiety makes I irritable, and also J because J is contemptuous of I; meanwhile, Q . . . Well, you get the idea. All of this happens in Key West, by the way. The other seven stories in the collection are not so dependent on the alphabet, but display Mr. Brodsky's predilection for complicated sentence structures, and abstract concepts.
Experimental fiction of this type is an acquired taste. Certainly it requires a kind of concentration not demanded by more conventional fiction and a greater interest in language itself than in story. Readers who enjoy wrestling with their books will find plenty to challenge them in Southernmost. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

This is experimental, abstract writing, and it has an internal logic of its own. (We know this because the book jacket warns that "serious demands" will be made on us.)
