5.0 out of 5 stars SUPERB PRE-1940S COMPILATION OF COUNTRY BLUES, March 30, 2005
This review is from: Southern Blues Volume 2 [Acrobat] (Audio CD)
The 2 separate cds of "Southern Blues," Vols. 1 and 2 are very well made, well executed compilations. both have excellent liner notes. both are very good to excellent transfer to cd format, with little or no surface noise on either cd. and best of all, a very good bargain price from this UK distributor, which also puts out a large number of bargain compilations of US blues and jazz from before WW2. all in all, if you manage to find this cd, you will not be disappointed, which includes some hard to find songs as well. dave.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like its predecessor, a fine collection of Southern blues, February 25, 2010

This review is from: Southern Blues Volume 2 [Acrobat] (Audio CD)
When you see a title like "Southern Blues, Volume 2," you know at once that it is in some way a follow-up to something called "Southern Blues, Volume 1." And indeed, "Southern Blues, Volume 2" has much in common with its predecessor. Like Volume 1, Volume 2 is a production of the same British recording company. Like Volume 1, it provides brief but useful liner notes. And like Volume 1, it focuses on relatively unadorned blues compositions from around 1927-49, many of which feature nothing more than the artist and his or her guitar. Some highlights include Henry Thomas's "Bull Doze Blues," covered years later by blues-rock band Canned Heat as "Goin' Up the Country," as well as songs by Blind Lemon Jefferson and Luke Jordan. If you want your blues music rocked up with heavy drums and loud electric guitar, this is not the album for you. If, on the other hand, you want to hear authentic Southern blues music as one would have heard it in the early- to mid-20th-century American South, you should find this album rewarding.
