5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly refreshing, September 16, 2003
By
Lynn (Tennessee) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Southern Comfort (Audio CD)
I had a couple of EG's other CD's, so I was anxious to get this new one. I was lucky enough to pick it up at one of her live performances. I've followed her career for a while now, and it's interesting to see how people who work hard and truly love what they do finally do get what they deserve. EG seems to be a genuine person, and her fans seem to genuinely love her.
EG wrote or co-wrote nine songs on SOUTHERN COMFORT and I've heard that it's getting a lot of airplay, especially on XM Radio. I don't know which songs are becoming listener favorites, but if I had to choose two from the album, it would be "Cry Like A Rainy Day" and "Just One More."
Some artists wouldn't dare attempt to cover an Etta James song, but EG not only attempted it with "Cry Like A Rainy Day," she nailed it - with such passion and conviction that you'd think she wrote it, gave birth to it. Etta should be proud...
And the closing song "Just One More" is so different that it takes the listener by surprise. Prepare yourself, because it may take your breath, like it did mine. As some of the critics have written, it's "a haunting tale of regret" and it will make you want to pick up the phone and call a loved one you haven't talked to in a while...
I've heard that EG has been working with some of my other favorite artists like Robert Cray and Merle Haggard, and from her website itinerary, it looks like she's going to be with Phoebe Snow and Delbert McClinton in the next few weeks. What an interesting mix. It just goes to show that good music doesn't necessarily have to be categorized. Call it blues or country, EG's music is just plain good music. I'd recommend SOUTHERN COMFORT to anyone who just wants to hear a fabulously rich voice, some interesting new material, and some great musicians.

5.0 out of 5 stars E G Kight, April 5, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Southern Comfort (Audio CD)
I'm giving this a five star rating because of two important factors, firstly, EG's exceptional singing ability and, secondly, the lead guitarist, Bill Hines, passionate playing on "Sad, Sad Sunday" (and other cuts). His evocative and understated playing is precisely what puts this song over top. By all accounts it should be a blues standard...it's that good.

I also like "Just One More," especially the tasteful piano accompaniment. The rest of the material is somewhat tamed for my tastes. Yet, it is EG's endearing singing quality and Hines soulful guitar playing that makes very good material sound superb, no matter how you mix it.

Both EG and Hines have a sonorous quality to their music which creates a tension similar to an epic romance novel where there is longing and setbacks between the central characters that pulls the reader (in this case the listener), closer in. Hines playing is slightly behind the beat creating a magical suspension. In effect, he is both inside and outside the music at the same time, which complements EG's haunting and marvelous phrasing. Both of these musicians are masterful in this tune, because they bring out the best in each other.

The shere magic of Hines playing off of EG makes me wonder what an album of these two inspired artists would sound like? I'd definately consider buying it...if this ever happens.

4.0 out of 5 stars another very good eg kight record, April 26, 2009
This review is from: Southern Comfort (Audio CD)
This is one of two eg kight recordings that I own (I bought it at the same time I bought "takin it easy"). While "takin it easy" is my favorite of the two, this is also a strong recording. EG Kight seems like one of those artists who just can't miss. This is mostly electrified blues in contrast to the previously mentioned one. It is nice on this record to see one of my favorite studio pianists, Chuck Leavell sitting in (he always is a welcome addition). There is a nice balance of songs here from the funky opening track to the gospel feeling "somebodies got to give" (note that gospel feeling is in reference to the feel of the piece more so than the lyrical content). There is also the rockin tune "let the blues move you" that has a great feel to it. Like another reviewer mentioned "sad sad sunday" is another standout, but perhaps my favorite is track 11 "lucky in love", in which Bill Hinds guitar playing over the passionate B3 organ soars. It is easy to recommend this record to anyone who loves the blues. She is certainly deserving of more popularity, and I imagine that she will become more and more well known (this was certainly the case with Bonnie Raitt and many other musicians). Everything I have heard her do has been very good. While I could probably find it in myself to give this recording five stars, I wish to reserve that rating for the greatest recordings. A four star rating in my mind fits here and is in no way meant to infer that this is not a great record.
