5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
This CD is simply great. Jimmie Van Zant (cousin of Ronnie, Johnny, & Donnie) gives us some great southern rock tunes on this CD. The first song, "Get Up", is a great country-rocker that reminds me a little of Molly Hatchet's "Flirtin' With Disaster" (only this one is better). "Bad Habits" is a bit more hard/southern rock (not as much country) and is also a great song...

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty solid southern rock
Okay, of course he's cashing in on his family-name (Jimmy's a cousin of the late Ronnie) and, yes, this sounds a bit like a poor man's Lynyrd Skynyrd. But anyone who likes Molly Hatchet or Skynyrd (old OR new) won't be dissapointed with this one. It contains solid, competent southern rock, which is al too rare in this day and age. Apart from that: Jimmy really seems to...

"Bad Habits" is a bit more hard/southern rock (not as much country) and is also a great song. "Ronnie's Song" is great and brings tears to my eyes. It's a bit like "Free Bird" in how it starts with a slower & softer tone and turns into a great jam. I give "Free Bird" a 10/10 & I give this one a 9/10. It's that good! "Angel in the Night" is another good one. Not as good as the first 3, but close. "Southern Comfort" doesn't really do much for me. I usually skip that one, but I listen to it occasionally. We then go on to a pretty decent cover of "Simple Man". It's not as good as the original, obviously, but I doubt that Jimmie intended it to be. Next is "Here To Stay", a great country tune about a family that lives on a farm and is determined never to sell it. You will hear a little bit of "Sweet Home Alabama" at a few parts, but in no way is this a copy of it. The final song, "Party in the Parking Lot" is basically just a good boogie tune that will make you want to get up and dance. Maybe not the best tune to end the album with, but still a good one.
If you're a Skynyrd fan (or even just a southern rock fan), your collection will not be complete without this album.
I know, the whole stars & bars cover design will be offensive to some people and will probably stop certain people from buying it (which is an understandable reaction). I just wish everybody could understand that they don't use it as a sign of racism or to be offensive; it's just a symbol of the South to them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jimmie Van Zant-Southern Comfort, November 15, 2000
This review is from: Southern Comfort (Audio CD)
As stated in other reviews I've read,I must agree that the Van Zant family has yet another great musician/song writer in Jimmie Van Zant. Southern Comfort is a must have for the southern rock music fan. Ronnie's Song and the Skynyrd cover of Simple Man are for me the high lights of this CD. Buy it....you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Van Zant Joins In With A Hot One, November 3, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Southern Comfort (Audio CD)
Jimmie Van Zant, a cousin of Ronnie, Donnie, and Johnny, has joined the family business with a hot-rockin' album. SOUTHERN COMFORT mixes the styles of Skynyrd, the Outlaws, and .38 Special in a totally original way, with a combination of blazing rockers and soulful ballads. The only second-rate cut is the insipid ballad "Angel In The Night", and while "Ronnie's Song" and the remake of "Simple Man" have been given a bum rap, they are actually excellent. Overall, this is a great album by a member of rock's first family of singers.

4.0 out of 5 stars The South has risen again - a good one from the south, June 30, 2000

If you like the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd you will like this album. The cousin of the late Ronnie van Zant shows he can match up with his other cousin Johnny and deliver a good southern rock album. Best song of the album is the amazing 8 min. plus "Ronnie's Song" of course a tribute to one of the legends of the South. This song only is worth the price of the CD alone but there's plenty more such as the Skynyrd cover Simple Man.

5.0 out of 5 stars SOUTHERN ROCK IS ALIVE AND WELL IN JIMMIE VAN ZANT !!!, July 10, 2001

Southern Comfort is truly just that. SOUTHERN COMFORT it is absolutely the best cd that I have purchased in a long time. Every song on the cd is well worth listening to. The haunting melody of RONNIES SONG sends goosbumps over ones entire body. I had the great fortune to be asked on stage by Jimmie himself recently and I can tell you it was the thrill of a lifetime. He truly is a Southern Gentleman. Yes, its true that he does sound like and also bears resemblance to cousin Ronnie but he is definitely a tremendous talent in his own right. It may be true that because he is a Van Zant may have led me to see him originally but the fact that he is a wonderful artist and preformer as well as a uniquely gentle person will definely keep me coming back for more. ROCK ON JIMMIE ROCK ON!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars LOOK OUT! THERE'S A NEW VAN ZANT IN TOWN!, September 22, 2000

If this release doesn't prove that the Van Zant family is the FIRST FAMILY OF ROCK'N'ROLL, then what will? Yes, with some apprehension I learned of this release. But hey, it's a Van Zant. This cd smokes like good ole' Southern Fried Rock ought to. You can sensce that Jimmie has a fire all his own to let it be known that he's in town. All the Van Zant will be proud of this one. I've seen Jimmie in concert and he has the control of the stage just like Ronnie did. Was able to talk to him for quite some time and he was really a very nice man. Hell, he even wanted to swap hats. Both of ours is like Ronnies'; too bad my heads too small.....Play it and you'll feel proud as a FREEBIRD!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Southern Rock!!! By Ronnie, Johnny, and Donnie's Cousin - Jimmie Van Zant "CD", February 9, 2009
This review is from: Southern Comfort (Audio CD)
VERY RARE SOUTHERN ROCK!!! THIS IS A VERY "RARE" ONE!!! This is an album cd by the Jimmie Van Zant Band. Jimmie Van Zant is a cousin of the late Ronnie Van Zant, and his brothers Johnny & Donnie. This cd contains a song co-written by Jimmie, Johnny, and Donnie Van Zant - "Get-UP". It also contains the Lynyrd Skynyrd classic: Simple Man, and a tribute to the late Ronnie Van Zant - "Ronnie's Song".

The song listing is as follows:
1.Get Up
2.Bad Habits (The same theme as "That Smell" by Skynyrd).
3.Ronnie's Sone (A southern man with southern pride).
4.Angel in the Night.
5.Southern Comfort.
6.Simple Man
7.Here to Stay
8.Party in the Parking Lot.

This is great, rare, Southern Rock, and I recommend it, that is if you can find one for sell. Thanks and may God Bless!!!

I recently acquired this Cd and have enjoyed it. However the review I read referred to Jimmie as being Ronnie Van Zant's brother when in actuality he is his cousin. The Cd is good, and Ronnie's song is worth buying the Cd to begin with. I wish Jimmie much luck with this Cd and those to come. If you are a southern music lover this is a great addition to the collection. If you are a Van Zant family fan than this is a must.
