3.0 out of 5 stars An OK Book for Southern Deer Hunters, August 5, 2010
This review is from: Southern Deer & Deer Hunting (Paperback)
This is an easy read and being a lifetime Southern deer hunter I can't find much negative in this book. I would say to those who plan on hunting allot in the deep south that have never been here before, to read it.

The different authors point out the differences you see down here from other parts of the country. A very good section on hunting in pine areas, by Bill Bynum IS the BEST I've ever read on hunting in planted pines that are all over the deep and mid south. I had to learn the hard way some of the techniques Bill points out to use. And, anybody who says deer don't stay in pine thickets only shows he knows nothing about deer hunting.

Different weapons are covered, including handguns, bows and black powder and again I have no problem with their choices and ideas.

The one area I do find fault is the area that concerns the use of dogs to deer hunt in the South. Chasing deer with dogs in the South is a tradition older than the country. The authors tell us at the outset that they will not be covering this aspect of the sport and that is sad and ultimately self defeating.

I've been deer hunting for 38 years and it's never been about the kill or the taking of game. It has been about the enjoyment of the hunt, to be with friends of a like mind and to care for the use of a resource that has been given us.

Within our own ranks we are being attacked by those who want to put their values on our backs and not for the good of the resource or the continuation of the sport, but for selfish and self centered reasons where the only thing that matters is the killing of the biggest deer.

These people who call themselves hunters attack the use of hunting with dogs, not because it's wrong or unfair, but so they can take over the woods just for themselves and put out food, plants, bait and supplement's that turn deer into nothing more tha glorified livestock.

Then they can go out and shoot a deer as if it were a cow out in a farmers pasture.

That's about what has become of this sport in many areas of the South and in many areas people are giving up hunting rather that putting up with this mindset that is all to prevelant today.

It's a shame the authors of this book can't see that and it's sad to know that as hunter's we face a bigger threat from within our own ranks than we have ever faced from the animal right's whacko's.
