Book Description

Indigo Love Spectrum May 6, 2008
Career-minded Athena Miles comes from a long line of Southern divas, women who live by the nursery rhyme: first comes love, then marriage, then baby in a baby carriage- in that exact order. Athena's famous mother, a celebrity chef dubbed "The Southern Honeybee," is the biggest diva of them all, having built her Queendom on these beliefs- none of which Athena has yet to achieve. Fast approaching thirty, Athena begins to question her life in her mother's shadow. Feeling the need to claim her own identity, Athena defies her family's wishes by guesting on a televised talk show. When the overly ambitious talk show host eviscerates Athena on live television she teeters on the edge of a nervous breakdown only to have her dysfunctionally eccentric family send her into a nosedive over the edge.

1.0 out of 5 stars sleep tonic, May 7, 2008
This review is from: Southern Fried Standards (Indigo Love Spectrum) (Mass Market Paperback)
What can I say, this book is so boring, I had to stop reading it, which is a first for me, even the really bad books with all the awful editing, I managed to read. I really love interracial books, but I am afraid this book bites the dust, I really can't finish it. I am on page 200+ and nothing remotely romantic has happened yet. If you want a really good sleeping aid get this book!

1.0 out of 5 stars big disappointment, May 14, 2008

This book was a total letdown. I had looked forward to reading this book base on the description but was really disappointed in the story and character development. I agree with the other readers and really wish that I had read their reviews prior to buying this book. There was minimal interaction between the main characters and so many secondary characters, that I just lost count and interest. The romance was non-existent. Don't waste your money.

1.0 out of 5 stars surprising low standards, May 13, 2008

Without repeating what the other reviewers have said, I'll just say that this book was very poorly written. So far, i've reached page 293. The major disappointment to me is that even with all of the character development that was done, character roles were still not very clear.

I was left with several questions about the main character's job, in fact. The author wrote at the beginning that she ran a community health center. However for the majority of this book, everything after the second chapter, she's managing/representing/interacting with musicians. Never again do they mention the fact that she works helping women with AIDS. Even the staff at the center is involved with the music industry. I think the author could not decide which occupation she really wanted to write about.

The main character's personality is amazingly weak. She is described as "having it all together" at one point but then identifies as a clutz, a slob, and frumpy in other areas of this 350+ page narrative. Beyond that she has no backbone (she can't stand up to anyone) and has panic attacks when faced with difficult situations. How exactly did she become the main character in a romance novel? The Hero, to me, is not developed at all. Really the only thing you know about him is that he is a day laborer by day and a mucisian by night who never went to college and is estranged from his family.

And no, there is little to no romance in this book. Take the suggestion of others. Don't waste your time.
