Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Williamsburg furniture curators Hurst and Prown have compiled a veritable catalogue raisonne of Southern decorative arts relating to furniture. This glorious work focuses not only on the fine artistry and diversity of the functional items but also the historical background of the Chesapeake, Low Country, and Backcountry regions of Virginia and North and South Carolina through brief articles on each of the regions. The second portion contains the catalog of works focusing on seating furniture, tables, case furniture (chests, tall clocks, cabinets), and other forms (cradles, beds, screens). Beautiful illustrations highlight each of the 183 objects from simple, roughhewn elegance to detailed, ornate craftsmanship. Descriptions of each object include a brief historical sketch, construction, condition, material, dimensions, marks, a provenance, and a brief bibliography. A glossary of furniture terms, including diagrams and line drawings, is also featured. This catalog is highly recommended for most decorative arts collections and general collections in major research libraries.?Stephen Allan Patrick, East Tennessee State Univ. Lib., Johnson City

5.0 out of 5 stars A Woodworker's Must-Have, June 12, 2000
This review is from: Southern Furniture 1680-1830 - The Colonial Williamsburg Collection (Williamsburg Decorative Arts Series) (Hardcover)
This book is incredible! If you've ever seen any of the furniture collection at Colonial Williamsburg, this book gives you all the details on the key pieces in the collection that the tour-guides just can't answer. Each piece is photographed, both exterior view and an interior view (drawers out, doors open, etc...), and full measurements. The best feature is that it also provides extensive history on the style and construction of each piece, complete with construction details (down to every last dovetail!). I picked it up for the woodworking information, but this book is also excelent for the historian.
